Ja taas juhlittiin

(FI) Meidän perheessä on kesällä aina melkoinen juhlaputki, sillä kaikkien syntymäpäivät ajoittuvat kesäkuukausille ja vielä hääpäiväkin on heinäkuussa. Eilen kuopus täytti 12 vuotta ja toivoi synttärikakuksi perinteisen kermakakun sijaan ranskalaista suklaakakkua. Kakusta tuli harvinaisen ruma, sillä sen pinta lohkeili suklaakuorrutuksen sekaan, mutta kaunis kattaus tekee paljon ja kun kakkuviipaleen päälle lisäsi ennen syömistä reilusti vadelmakastiketta ja kermavaahtoa, epätasainen pinta katosi näkyvistä. Näiden kuvien ottamisen jälkeen kakun päälle aseteltiin myös 12 kynttilää puhaltamista varten. Synttärilahjaksi tytär sai uuden isomman polkupyörän, joka käytiin jo lauantaina valitsemassa ja tilaamassa pyöräliikkeestä. Melkeinpä haluaisin itsellenikin yhä suloisen pastellisen turkoosin menopelin :)

(IT) In estate abbiamo sempre una festa dopo l'altra nella nostra famiglia, visto che abbiamo tutti il compleanno nei mesi estivi e anche il nostro anniversario di matrimonio è in luglio. Ieri la nostra secondogenita ha compiuto 12 anni e ha voluto una torta francese al cioccolato invece della solita torta da compleanno. Il risultato non è stato per nulla bello perché la superficie della torta si sbriciolava quando spalmavo la glassa, ma apparecchiare in modo bello aiuta sempre e ricoperta di salsa ai lamponi e panna montata non si vedeva più com'era fatta la torta. Dopo aver scattato queste foto abbiamo pure aggiunto le 12 candeline. Come regalo di compleanno le abbiamo comprato una bici nuova che è stata scelta e ordinata in un negozio di biciclette già sabato. Quasi quasi ne vorrei anch'io una cosi carina in color turchese pastello chiaro. :)

(EN) During the summer we have one celebration after another in the family because we all have our birthdays in the summer months and also our wedding anniversary is in July. Yesterday our younger daughter had her 12th birthday and asked for a French chocolate cake instead of a more traditional birthday cake. The result was really ugly since the surface crumbled while I spread the melted chocolate glaze on it, but when you added some raspberry sauce and whipped cream on your slice you really couldn't see the cake anymore. After taking these pictures we also put 12 candles on the cake. The birthday present was a new bicycle that was already chosen and ordered at a store on Saturday. I actually wouldn't mind having a similar cute pastel turquoise bike myself. :)

Amsterdamin lumoissa

(FI) Kesäloman lopussa tekemämme reissu Amsterdamiin oli kaikin puolin onnistunut ja ihastuimme kaikki kaupunkiin kovasti. Valokuvat sen sijaan eivät olleet ihan yhtä onnistuneita, sillä otin suurimman osan niistä kanaviristeilyllä liikkuvasta veneestä käsin. Teimme risteilyn pienen veneen kyydissä, mikä oli todella hyvä valinta, sillä pääsimme myös pienille kanaville, joiden varrella oli runsaasti kelluvia koteja eli asuntolaivoja. Veneen ystävällinen kapteeni päästi lisäksi juuri samana päivänä synttäreitä viettäneen kuopuksen vähäksi aikaa ruoriin ohjaamaan paattia. Kyseinen syntymäpäivä ei varmasti unohdu ihan äkkiä. Ihan hyvin se sujui ja ainoa törmäys toiseen veneeseen oli rupattelemaan keskittyneen kapteenin itsensä syytä. Poimin tähän nyt onnistuneimpia kuvia, mutta oli näissäkin vähän muokkaamista. Onneksi on Lightroom :)

(IT) Il viaggio che abbiamo fatto ad Amsterdam proprio prima della fine delle vacanze estive è stato veramente ben riuscito e la città ci è piaciuta tantissimo. Le foto invece non sono riuscite tanto bene perché ho scattato la maggior parte durante il giro in barca in movimento. Abbiamo fatto il giro in una barca piccola e la scelta è stata proprio giusta perché siamo riusciti ad andare anche nei canali piccoli dove c'erano tante case galleggianti. Il gentile capitano ha pure dato alla nostra secondogenita la possibilità di guidare la barca per un po' ed era il suo compleanno proprio quel giorno. Mi sa che è uno di quei compleanni che si ricorderà per sempre. È andato tutto benissimo, l'unica volta che siamo andati a sbattere contro un'altra barca era colpa del capitano stesso che si era distratto. Queste foto sono quelle riuscite meglio e le ho dovuto trattare un bel po'. Meno male c'è Lightroom :)

(EN) Our trip to Amsterdam at the end of the summer holidays was just perfect and we all fell in love with the city. The pictures instead didn't turn out quite as well because I took most of them during a canal cruise on board a moving boat. We chose a cruise in a small boat and it was a wise decision because we could enter also in the smaller canals and see lots of houseboats. The captain was really kind and let our younger daughter steer the boat for a while and it was her birthday that day. I'm pretty sure she will remember this special birthday forever. It went just fine and the only time we bumped into another boat it was because the captain himself was a bit distracted. Here are some of the best pictures I got but I still had to retouch them quite a bit. I'm so happy I have Lightroom in my computer :)

Borrowed Shapes - arkkitehtuuria kuvina

(FI) Bremenissä ehtii vielä parin viikon ajan katsomaan Eiko Grimbergin kiinnostavaa video- ja valokuvanäyttelyä Borrowed Shapes. Kävin itse näyttelyn avajaisissa ja pääsin juttelemaan taiteilijan kanssa. Hän kertoi tutkineensa aiemmin 60-luvun italialaista rationalismia New Orleansissa ja Modenassa, ja uusi näyttely on aiemman työn jatkumo. "Nyt kohteena on espanjalaisen arkkitehdin Ricardo Bofillin 80-luvun eklektismiä edustava postmoderni arkkitehtuuri Ranskassa. Tyyli poikkeaa italialaisesta, sillä Bofillin arkkitehtuurissa on viitteitä niin antiikkiin kuin myös Ranskan vallankumouksen aikaiseen arkkitehtuuriin." Rakennusten julkisivuissa näkyy koristeellisia elementtejä kuten pylväitä ja kapiteeleja, jotka tuovat mieleen antiikin temppelit ja teatterit. Julkisivut ovat kuitenkin ristiriidassa rakennusten sisätilojen kanssa. Kyse on usein työväestölle esikaupunkiin edullisesti elementeistä rakennetuista asuintaloista, jotka ovat sisältä hyvin vaatimattomia. Korea kuori peittää ja kätkee sisäänsä rakennusten ja niiden asukkaiden todellisen historian.

(IT) A Brema si può vedere ancora per un paio di settimana l'interessante mostra Borrowed Shapes di Eiko Grimberg che consiste in un videosaggio e alcune fotografie. Io sono stata già all'inaugurazione e ho potuto parlare un po' con l'artista. Mi ha raccontato che ha studiato prima il razionalismo italiano degli anni '60 a New Orleans e a Modena e il lavoro continua in questa mostra. "Ora il soggetto è l'architettura postmoderna dell'architetto spagnolo Ricardo Bofill in Francia. Rappresenta l'eclettismo degli anni '80. Lo stile si differenzia da quello italiano perché nell'architettura di Bofill si fa allusione sia all'antichità che all'architettura del periodo della Rivoluzione francese". Nelle facciate degli edifici ci sono elementi decorativi come colonne e capitelli che richiamano templi e teatri antichi. Le facciate sono però in contraddizione con gli interni degli edifici. Spesso si tratta di palazzi costruiti in modo economico in periferia per la classe operaia e gli interni sono molto modesti. La superficie decorativa copre e nasconde dentro di sé la vera storia degli edifici e dei loro abitanti.

(EN) You can still see for a couple of weeks in Bremen Eiko Grimberg's interesting video and photography exhibition Borrowed Shapes. I have been to the opening and had the chance to talk with the artist. He told me that he had previously studied 1960's Italian rationalism in New Orleans and Modena and this exhibition is a continuation of the previous work. "Now the subject is Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill's postmodern architecture in France. It represents 1980's eclecticism. The style is different from the Italian because Bofill's architecture makes allusions both to antiquity and to the architecture in the period of French Revolution." In the facades there are decorative elements like columns and capitals that recall classical temples and theaters. Anyhow, the facades are inconsistent with the interiors of the buildings. Many of the buildings were put up inexpensively in the suburbs as housing for the working class and the interiors are very modest. The decorative surface covers and hides the real history of the buildings and their inhabitants.

Elämää Venetsiassa

(FI) Vaikka käyttäydyinkin Venetsiassa kuin kunnon turisti ja kiersin kolmessa vuorokaudessa kuusi museota tai näyttelyä ja käväisin myös San Marcolla, minusta oli hauskaa seurata paikallisten ihmisten elämää ja leikitellä ajatuksella, millaista kaupungissa olisi asua. Voi olla, että oman kodin sisustuskin muuttuisi jonkin verran, jos ei tarvitsisi ajatella valon maksimoimista ja jos ympärillä olisi ihan erilaisia värejä ja muotoja kuin nykyään. Katsokaa nyt vaikka Palazzo Nani Mocenigon yleisövessassa ottamiani kuvia (9. ja 10. kuva). Noissa puitteissa skandinaavinen selkeys saattaisi tuntua kovin mitättömältä ja pliisulta. Vai alkaisiko sitä juuri kaivata kaiken koristeellisuuden vastapainoksi? Toisaalta ihminen tulee helposti myös sokeaksi kauniillekin ympäristölle eikä sitä huomioi  ja osaa välttämättä arvostaa ennen kuin taas vaihtaa maisemaa. Maasta toiseen muuttavaa kohtaavasta kulttuurisokista puhutaan paljon, mutta minulle ovat tuttuja myös esteettiset sokit. Oletteko te koskaan kohdanneet sellaista?

(IT) Anche se mi sono comportata a Venezia da una vera e propria turista e ho visto in tre giorni sei tra musei e mostre e sono pure andata in Piazza San Marco, mi sono divertita a osservare la gente locale e immaginare come sarebbe vivere nella città. Può essere che anche il mio stile di arredamento sarebbe un po' diverso se non ci fosse bisogno di pensare a come massimizzare la quantità di luce e se l'ambiente intorno fosse completamente diverso da quello attuale. Guardate per esempio le foto che ho fatto nel bagno del Palazzo Nani Mocenigo (foto numero 9 e 10). Circondato da questo tipo di stile l'arredamento semplice e minimalistico scandinavo potrebbe cominciare a sembrare molto monotono e poco interessante. O forse uno lo apprezzerebbe ancora di più perché contrasta con tutti gli elementi decorativi? D'altro canto si diventa facilmente anche ciechi nei riguardi dell'ambiente anche bello in cui si vive e non lo si nota più o non lo si sa apprezzare finché non ci si sposta di nuovo da qualche altra parte. Si parla molto dello shock culturale quando uno cambia paese ma io ho sperimentato anche vari shock estetici. Sapete di cosa parlo? Vi è mai capitato?

(EN) Even though I behaved in Venice like a typical tourist and visited in three days six museums or exhibitions and went also to Piazza San Marco, I enjoyed observing the locals and amused myself thinking of what it would be like to live in the city. Maybe even my home interior would look a bit different if I didn't have to think about how to maximize the amount of light and if the surroundings were completely different than now. You'll get my point if you look at the pictures I took in the ladies room of Palazzo Nani Mocenigo (pictures 9 and 10). Simple Scandinavian style could start to feel quite boring and bland in this setting. Or would you just start to appreciate it even more because it contrasts with all the ornaments around? On the other hand you can easily get so used to even the most beautiful surroundings that you don't notice them anymore until you move someplace else. People speak a lot about the cultural shock you experience when you move abroad or back home but I have also experienced various esthetic shocks. Do you know what I'm talking about?

(FI) Venetsiassa on meneillään Giorgio Cinin säätiön ja Pentagram Stiftungin järjestämä ja Kaisa Koiviston ja Pekka Korvenmaan kuratoima näyttely, jossa on esillä suomalaista lasia Christina ja Bruno Bischofbergerin kokoelmista. Näyttelyä ehtii katsomaan vielä 2.8. asti. Ensi kuussa näyttelyyn liittyen järjestetään myös yhden päivän mittainen Il vetro finlandese -seminaari, ja arvatkaa kuka on menossa sitä kuuntelemaan! Edellinen Venetsian reissu ajoittuukin aikaan ennen lasten syntymää... Kuka lähtee mukaan?

(IT) A Venezia è ora in corso una mostra sul vetro finlandese nella collezione Christina e Bruno Bischofberger, organizzato da Fondazione Giorgio Cini e Pentagram Stiftung, a cura di Kaisa Koivisto e Pekka Korvenmaa. C'è ancora tempo fino al 2.8. per andare a vederla. Il prossimo mese avrà luogo anche un convegno sul vetro finlandese e indovinate chi sta andando! L'ultima volta che sono stata a Venezia era prima che nascessero le figlie... Chi viene con me?

(EN) In Venice there's at the moment an exhibition on Finnish glass in Christina and Bruno Bischofberger's collection, organized by Giorgio Cini Foundation and Pentagram Stiftung and curated by Kaisa Koivisto and Pekka Korvenmaa. There's time until 2nd August to see the exhibition. Next month takes place also a seminar on Finnish Glass and guess who's going! The last time I have been to Venice was before the children were born... Who wants to come with me?

Toukokuun kukkaloistoa

(FI) Kävin eilen pihalla kuvaamassa muutamia tällä hetkellä kukkivia kasveja. Ensimmäisen kuvan kärhö tosin ei ole ihan vielä siinä pisteessä, mutta köynnös on silti viehättävän näköinen komeine nuppuineen. Tummanpunainen rhododendron on jo lopettelemassa kukintaansa, kun taas violetti on juuri kauneimmillaan, ja pari vuotta sitten istuttamani ruukkukielo on kasvanut jo ihan komeaksi ryppääksi. Ero pihalla on melkoinen verrattuna ensimmäiseen vuoteen, jolloin siellä kukki keväällä ainoastaan muutama pensas eikä perennoja ollut lainkaan. Puutarhanhoito tuntuu joskus työläältä, mutta kyllä se sentään myös palkitsee ja kuulemma myös postaa stressiä. :)

(IT) Ieri ho fotografato alcuni dei fiori che abbiamo in questo momento nel giardino. La clematis della prima foto non sta ancora fiorendo ma anche i boccioli grandi mi sono sembrati belli. Il rododendro rosso sta già finendo la fioritura mentre quello viola è ora al meglio e il mughetto che ho piantato un paio di anni fa è diventato già bello grande. Devo dire che si nota la differenza paragonato al primo anno perché c'erano solo un paio di cespugli che facevano fiori e niente fiori perenne. A volte è faticoso prendere cura del giardino ma vedere i risultati da anche molta soddisfazione e il giardinaggio dovrebbe pure diminuire lo stress. :)

(EN) Yesterday I went to take pictures of some flowers we have at the moment in the garden. The clematis in the first picture isn't blooming yet but the big buds look quite beautiful. The red rhododendron has almost finished flowering while the purple one is at its best and the lily of the valley I planted a couple of years ago has spread quite a bit already. You really notice the difference compared to the first year when there were only a couple of bushes blooming and no perennial flowers at all. Sometimes taking care of the garden feels like lots of work but it's also really rewarding and garden work should also reduce stress. :)

Päivä Sienassa

(FI) Sienassa vietimme varmasti eniten aikaa tuomiokirkossa eli Santa Maria Assuntan katedraalissa, joka on sinisine tähtikattoineen ja marmoripintoineen eräs kauneimmista tietämistäni kirkoista. Lounasaikaan löysimme Piazza del Campon läheltä kivan ja kohtuuhintaisen ruokapaikan nimeltä Bargello, jota voin lämpimästi suositella, ja iltapäivällä kävimme tietenkin herkuttelemassa legendaarisessa Pasticceria Nanninissa. Loppuaika menikin kaupunkia kierrellessä ja katsellessa ja lähdimme takaisin kohti majapaikkaa vasta, kun kaikkien jalat olivat niin väsyneet, että pieni lepo oli paikallaan. Tässä oli nyt sitten tämän reissun postaukset, mutta pari päivän päästä pakkaan laukut uudestaan ja lennän jälleen Italiaan ihmettelemään Milanon huonekalumessuja. Jos jollakulla on jo kokemusta kyseisistä messuista ja hyviä vinkkejä ensikertalaiselle, niin olen pelkkänä korvana!

(IT) A Siena siamo rimasti più a lungo nel duomo, cioè nel cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta che con i suoi soffitti blu stellati e superfici di marmo è una delle chiese più belle che abbia mai visto. All'ora di pranzo abbiamo trovato un posto ottimo con prezzi ragionevoli, l'osteria Bargello, che posso veramente consigliare, e nel pomeriggio siamo andati ad assaggiare i leggendari dolci della pasticceria Nannini. Per il resto abbiamo girato la città finché i piedi non facevano tanto male che abbiamo deciso di tornare al Grande Prato. Non scriverò altro su questo viaggio ma tra un paio di giorni rifaccio le valige e vado a visitare il Salone del Mobile a Milano. Se ci siete già stati e avete consigli da darmi, sono tutt'orecchi!

(EN) In Siena we spent most time in the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Thanks to the blue vaulted ceilings with golden stars and all the marble surfaces it's one of the most beautiful churches I know. During lunch time we found a really nice place with reasonable prices called Osteria Bargello that I can recommend and in the afternoon we had a delicious snack in the legendary Pasticceria Nannini. For the rest of the day we just walked around in the center until our feet were really hurting and we decided to head back to Grande Prato. This is all I'm going to write about this trip but in a couple of days I will pack my suitcase again and head for the Furniture Fair in Milan. If you have already been there and have any good advice for a novice I'm all ears!
