Projekti Domus-tuoli

 (FI) Jee, yksi ikuisuusprojekti on saatettu taas (melkein) päätökseen! Vanha Domus-tuoli oli työn alla todella pitkään, mutta nyt se on kuin ihmeen kaupalla ruokasalissa esittelemässä uutta mattamustaa pintaansa. Pöydän ympärillä on vihdoin suunniteltu istuinsetti, kun molemmissä päissä on käsinojallinen tuoli. Kun avuksi otetaan vielä pari Aalto-jakkaraa, niin ruokapöydän ääreen mahtuu jopa 12 henkeä kerralla.

Alkuperäinen Domus-tuoli, joka näkyy postauksen viimeisessä kuvassa, oli mielestäni aivan ihana. Valitettavasti vain sen lisäksi että istuimen reunasta puuttui viilun paloja, koko pinta oli halkeillut ja runko hutera, joten käyttökunnossa tuoli ei missään tapauksessa sellaisenaan ollut. Ammattilainen varmaankin olisi pystynyt restauroimaan sen alkuperäisen kaltaiseksi kaksiväriseksi, mutta omat taitoni tuntien katsoin parhaaksi käsitellä tuolin mustaksi.

Rungon vahvistamisen (liimaa ja puutikkuja ruuvinreikiin) ja monen paklaamis- ja hiomiskierroksen jälkeen tein pintakäsittelyn Tikkurilan sävytetyllä Kiva-lakalla (sävy Hiili). Lakkakerrosten lukumäärää en edes laskenut, muttei tainnut viisi riittää missään kohtaa. Kun vetelin selkänojan etupuolelle viimeiseksi tarkoitettua kerrosta, onnistuin vielä sohaisemaan pensselin jo hieman kuivahtaneeseen reunaan, joten oli pakko lisätä kauttaaltaan vielä yksi bonuskerros seuraavana päivänä. Siinä vaiheessa hieman jo harmitti... No, lopuksi pinnasta tuli kuitenkin mielestäni todella kaunis, ja puun tuntu on yhtä tallella.

Mikä sitten on vielä kesken? Kasasin tuolin käyttäen vanhoja ruuveja, joista olin poistanut ruosteet sitruunahapon avulla. Ruoste oli kuitenkin tehnyt ruuvin pinnasta kovin karhean, ja koska kanta jää ihan pintaan, istuja saattaisi rikkoa housunsa tai naarmuttaa ihonsa. Nyt pitää siis vielä ostaa uudet ruuvit ja vaihtaa ne alkuperäisten tilalle. Tuoli on näin ollen toistaiseksi istumiskiellossa, mutta katsella sitä onneksi jo saa. Juuri tuota mustaa tuolia ruokasalin sisustus tuntuikin olevan vailla. Mitä te tykkäätte?

(IT) Evviva, ho (quasi) finito un progetto che sembrava non finisse mai! Ho restaurato una vecchia sedia Domus veramente a lungo ma ora sta nella sala da pranzo a mostrare la nuova superfice nera opaca. Intorno al tavolo ci sono finalmente tutte le sedie che ci volevo quando a tutt'e due le estremità c'è una sedia coi braccioli. Prendendo anche un paio di sgabelli di Artek ci possiamo sedere fino a 12 persone.

La sedia originale che si vede nell'ultima foto mi piaceva tanto ma purtroppo ci mancavano pezzi dal bordo del sedile e inoltre la struttura non era stabile. Non ci si poteva quindi sedere. Un professionista avrebbe sicuramente saputo restaurare la sedia com'era originalmente ma sapendo i miei limiti ho deciso di farla tutta nera.

Dopo aver rinforzato la struttura (ho messo colla e legno nei buchi prima di riattaccare le viti) e tanti giri di stuccatura e levigatura ho laccato la sedia con lacca Kiva nera di Tikkurila. Non so quanti strati ne ho messo ma penso più di cinque. Quando pensavo di dare l'ultima passata allo schienale sono riuscita a toccare con il pennello il lato già un po' asciutto e ho dovuto aggiungere ancora uno strato il giorno dopo. A quel punto mi sentivo piuttosto frustrata... Comunque ora la superficie mi sembra molto bella e c'è comunque sempre la sensazione di legno.

Allora cosa manca? Ho montato la sedia con le vecchie viti da cui avevo tolto la ruggine con acido citrico. La ruggine ha comunque reso le viti molto ruvide e siccome restano in superficie, uno potrebbe rompersi i pantaloni o graffiarsi. Bisogna ancora comprare nuove viti delle stesse misure e cambiarle. È quindi vietato sedersi sulla sedia per il momento ma la si può già guardare. Sembra che fosse proprio il pezzo mancante dall'arredo della sala da pranzo. Voi che ne dite?

(EN) Whopee, I have (almost) finished a project that seemed to go on forever! I refurbished our old Domus chair for several months but, incredible but true, the chair is now in our dining room showing its new black finishing. Around the table there's finally the planned amount of chairs and one with armrests at both table ends. If we add also a couple of Artek stools, we can have 12 people sitting around the table.

I really loved the original chair that you can see in the last picture but it was in a pretty bad shape. There were pieces of wood missing from the seat, the surface had lots of small cracks and the structure wasn't stable. So you couldn't actually sit on the chair. I'm sure a professional would have been able to return the chair close to its original state but I know my limits and decided to make it all black.

After reinforcing the structure (I put glue and pieces of wood in the screw holes) and many rounds of putty and sanding I finished the wooden surface with black Kiva lacquer by Tikkurila. I didn't count the layers but I'm pretty sure there's more than five. When I giving the last coat on the back rest i managed to touch with the brush the part that was already a bit dry so I had to add an extra layer the next day. At that point I was feeling pretty frustrated... Anyhow, at the end the surface looks really good and it still feels like wood.

So what's left to do? After lacquering I mounted the pieces using the original screws. I did remove the rust with citric acid but the rust had made the metal really rough. Since the head remains on the surface, one could rip the trousers or scratch one's skin. Therefore the screws still need to be replaced. It's thus forbidden to sit on the chair for the moment but at least you can already look at it. It feels like this black chair was really the missing piece of the dining room interior. What do you think?

Uusi yöpöytä

(FI) Flunssapotilaana sängyssä makoillessani tulin siihen tulokseen, että entisellä yöpöydälläni eli Kartellin Componibilin päällä oli ihan liian vähän laskutilaa. Kun vielä kurkistin Componibilin lokeroihin, huomasin, että ne olivat käytännössä tyhjät, joten pelkkä pöytäratkaisu olisi ihan riittävä. Tuumasta toimeen, Componibili muutti pari kerrosta alaspäin kylpyhuoneen säilytysratkaisuksi ja uusi yöpöytäni on Aino Aallon vuonna 1932 suunnittelema Artekin sivupöytä 606. Pidin kovasti tästä pöydästä vanhana kromijalkaisena versiona, mutta onhan tuo nykyinen kokomusta todella tyylikäs ja graafinen. Pöydän jalkarakenteessa oleva aukko on lisäksi kuin tehty lukuvalona toimivan valaisimen jalkaa varten. Arvatkaa muuten mitä... Nyt miehen yöpöytä näyttää ihan nuhjuiselta ja kaipaa puolestaan raikastusta. Lähtiköhän tästä taas ketjureaktio käyntiin? :)

(IT) Quando ero malata di raffreddore mi sono accorta che il ripiano del mio vecchio comodino, cioè del Componibili di Kartell era veramente troppo piccolo. Quando ho guardato dentro gli sportelli, erano praticamente vuoti quindi ho capito che un tavolino avrebbe potuto funzionare ugualmente bene. Detto fatto, il Componibili è stato spostato nel bagno del piano di sotto e io ho un nuovo comodino, il tavolino 606 di Artek, design Aino Aalto del 1932. Mi piaceva molto la versione vecchia del tavolino che aveva la struttura cromata ma devo dire che anche questa completamente nera è molto elegante e grafica. Inoltre la parte aperta della struttura del tavolino sembra essere fatta per la base della mia lampada da lettura. Ma, sapete una cosa... Ora il comodino di mio marito sembra proprio datato e consumato e bisognerebbe rinfrescarlo in qualche modo. Non è che ho fatto partire una reazione a catena? :)

(EN) When I stayed in bed with a flu I noticed that the table top of my old nightstand, a Compobili by Kartell, was really too small to be practical. I checked what I had inside the cupboard and it was practically empty so I actually didn't need all the storage space. So, no sooner said than done, the Componibili is now in the downstairs bathroom and I have a new nightstand, Side Table 606 by Artek, designed by Aino Aalto in 1932. I really liked the old version of this table with a chrome base but I must admit that also this all black version is really elegant and graphic. Plus the open part of the structure of the table seems to be made for the base of my reading light. But you know what... Now my husband's nightstand looks really worn-out and boring and something should be done to freshen it up. Have I perhaps caused a chain reaction? :)

Artekin uusi myymälä

(FI) Pääsiäislomalla kävin Joannan kanssa katsastamassa Artekin uuden myymälän Helsingissä. Keskuskadulla Stockmannin takana sijaitseva myymälä levittäytyy kahteen kerrokseen, ja esillä on Artekin lisäksi Vitraa sekä muita valikoituja tuotteita. Tilat on remontoitu upeasti, esimerkiksi portaikon reunuksen aaltoileva profiili on hieno yksityiskohta. Unelmien designklassikoiden ohella myymälä tarjoaa kävijälle hauskoja ideoita ja inspiraatiota. Itselleni ei ainakaan olisi tullut mieleen käyttää Utensiloa kukkamaljakkona, mutta hyvin näyttää toimivan. Katseltavaa on niin paljon, että myymälävierailuun kannattaa varata ihan reilusti aikaa. Suosittelen pistäytymään, jollette ole vielä käyneet tutustumassa uusiin tiloihin!

(IT) Durante le vacanze di pasqua sono andata con Joanna a vedere il nuovo flagship store di Artek a Helsinki. Il negozio è situato in Keskuskatu dietro Stockmann e su due livelli si trovano, oltre ai prodotti di Artek e Vitra, anche altri prodotti selezionati. Lo spazio è stato ristrutturato con cura, per esempio il profilo ondulante della scala è un bel dettaglio. Il negozio non offre ai clienti solo design ma anche tante idee e ispirazione. Io non ci avrei mai pensato di usare l'Utensilo come vaso per fiori ma sembra funzionare benissimo. Ci sono tante cose da vedere che meglio non avere fretta quando si visita il negozio. Consiglio di andarci se non l'avete ancora visto!

(EN) During the Easter holidays I went with Joanna to check out the new Artek Flagship Store in Helsinki. The store, spread out over two levels, is situated in Keskuskatu behind Stockmann and sells besides Artek and Vitra products also a selection of items by other brands. The space has been renovated with care, for example the wavy profile of the staircase is a beautiful detail. The store offers the clients dreamy design classics but also loads of ideas and inspiration. I would never have thought of using the Vitra Utensilo as a flower vase but it seems fit for the job. There are so many things to see that one really must allow some time for the visit. I warmly recommend to stop by if you still haven't seen the place!

Espan Artekissa

(FI) Aloitin kesälomakuvien purkamisen oikeastaan vähän väärästä kohdasta, sillä emme suinkaan sännänneet ensimmäiseksi Asuntomessuille. Kun olimme vihdoin perillä Helsingissä 30 tunnin laivamatkan jälkeen, veimme tytöt kavereittensa luo yökyläilemään ja lähdimme miehen kanssa Helsingin keskustaan viettämään laatuaikaa Artekissa. Eihän mikään voi voittaa kiertelyä  näin ihanassa sisustusliikkeessä. Loppuun täytyi tehdä vielä pieni turistikierros Esplanadilla ja Senaatintorilla ennen suuntaamista ruokakauppaan, joka sekin on muuten aika viihdyttävää aina, kun vaihtaa maata ja maisemaa. Nytkin oli mukavaa kierrellä käytäviä ja täyttää ostoskärry karjalanpiirakoilla ja muilla suomalaisilla suosikkiruoilla yrittää samalla bongata valikoimaan edellisen reissun jälkeen ilmestyneitä uutuustuotteita. Tuo muuten taisi olla koko kesäloman rauhallisin päivä, sillä sen jälkeen sovittua ohjelmaa riitti joka päivälle ja paljon etukäteen suunniteltuja jäi vielä tekemättä. Ensi kerralla sitten! Muistakaahan muuten, että sunnuntaihin asti ehtii osallistua edellisen postauksen arvontaan, jossa voi voittaa rannekkeita Uudenkaupungin Vanhat Talot -tapahtumaan!

(IT) Ho iniziato con le foto delle vacanze in ordine sbagliato perché in realtà non siamo andati per prima cosa a vedere la Fiera della casa. Arrivati a Helsinki dopo 30 ore di viaggio sul traghetto abbiamo portato le figlie a casa delle amiche dove sono rimaste a dormire e io e mio marito siamo andati insieme al centro di Helsinki a visitare il negozio di Artek. Non c'è nulla di meglio di un giro in un bel negozio di arredamento, vero? Dopo abbiamo fatto un giro turistico nel parco di Esplanadi e alla piazza del Senato prima di andare a fare la spesa al supermercato, il che è pure bello quando si cambia città e paese. Anche questa volta è stato divertente riempire il carrello con tutte le delizie finlandesi e guardare gli scaffali per vedere se ci sono prodotti nuovi, spuntati dopo l'ultima visita. Il primo giorno è stato anche il giorno più tranquillo perché gli altri giorni sono stati piuttosto pieni di programmi eppure non siamo riusciti a fare tutto ciò che volevamo. Insomma, saranno per la prossima volta!

(EN) I started to show you our holiday trip pictures in the wrong order because we didn't actually go directly to the Housing fair. Arrived to Helsinki after a 30 hour trip on the ferry we took the girls to their friends' house where they stayed for a sleepover and me and my husband went to the city center and spent some quality time at the Artek store. There's nothing like visiting in a beautiful home design store, don't you think? After that we did a small tourist tour in the Esplanadi park and around the Senate Square before going grocery shopping. That's actually nice, as well, when you go to a different city and country. It was nice to fill the shopping cart with out favourite Finnish food and try to see if there are any new products on the shelves. I think the first day was also the most relaxed one during our trip because all the other days were pretty full of different kinds of program. Still we didn't manage to do everything we had planned before hand. Well, next time then!

Artekin hylly ja arvonnan voittaja

(FI) Alkukesän projektina kunnostin ja maalasin valkoiseksi vanhan viilupinnaltaan halkeilleen Artekin koivuhyllyn. Hylly tuli teinin huoneeseen sängyn yläpuolelle, koska vanha yöhylly oli turhan pieni ja pursuili tavaraa. Kannattimeen kiinnitettiin lukulamppu, jonka värin tytär itse valitsi.  Seuraavaksi huoneessa pitäisi ripustaa seinälle asukkaan omia taideteoksia, jotka odottelevat toistaiseksi lipaston päällä. Tytär itse haluaisi taulut sängyn yläpuolelle, mutta silloin joka seinällä olisi jotakin, ja pieni huone kaipaa mielestäni myös tyhjää pintaa. Yksi vaihtoehto olisi siirtää kaikki taulut samalle seinälle taulukollaasiksi, mutta taidamme pohtia asiaa rauhassa ja ryhtyä hommiin vasta lomareissun jälkeen. Vaatenaulakko on ollut huoneessa ihan loistava ratkaisu, sillä se on aina täynnä vaatteita ja kasseja, jotka muuten luultavasti löytyisivät lattialta. Huone ei nimittäin tosiaankaan ole yleensä näin siisti. Onneksi ehdin ottaa kuvia ennen kuin normaali teiniarki levittäytyy taas tilaan.

(IT) All'inizio di quest'estate ho dipinto bianco una vecchia mensola di Artek che aveva la superfice un po' rovinata. Abbiamo appeso la mensola sopra il letto nella stanza della primogenita perché la vecchia mensola ci aveva era un po' troppo piccola. Nel supporto abbiamo attaccato una lampada di lettura il cui colore è stato scelto da mia figlia. Il prossimo progetto da fare in questa stanza è di appendere le sue opere d'arte che aspettano ancora sopra un mobile. Mia figlia vorrebbe appendere i quadri sopra il letto ma a quel punto ci sarebbe qualcosa su ogni muro e secondo me una stanza piccola ha bisogno di anche superfici vuote. Una possibilità sarebbe si spostare anche tutti i vecchi quadri e fare una parete d'arte dietro il letto ma penso che sarà meglio riflettere con calma e continuare dopo il viaggio in Finlandia. L'appendibiti è veramente funzionale perché è sempre pieno di vestiti e di borse che altrimenti sarebbero probabilmente per terra. Normalmente la stanza non è per niente ordinato come in queste immagini. Per fortuna sono riuscita a fare le foto prima che la vita quotidiana di un adolescente occupa di nuovo tutto lo spazio.

(EN) In the beginning of the summer I restored and painted white an old Artek shelf with surface damage. We hung the shelf in our older daughter's room above the bed because the shelf she had there was a bit too small. To the bracket is attached a reading lamp she chose herself. The next project to do in this room is to hang my daughter's artwork that are waiting on a dresser. She would like to hang them above the bed but in that case there would be something on every wall and I think that a small room needs also some empty wall space. One solution would be to move also all the old pictures and to create an art wall behind the bed but I think it's better take some time and continue only after our holiday trip. Having a coat rack in the room is really a great solution. It's always full of clothes and bags that would otherwise probably be on the floor. The truth is that the room is normally far from being this tidy. I had to take these picture quickly before the everyday teenager life takes the room over.

Kahta en vaihtaisi -haaste

(FI) Tunne tilat -blogin Karin haastoi minut kertomaan suhteestani sisustusesineisiin ja nimeämään rakkaimmat tavarat, jotka ovat kiertäneet mukana kodista toiseen. Tunnustan heti alkuun, että kiinnyn kovastikin moniin kotiimme hakittuihin esineisiin. Itse asiassa yritän välttää sellaisten asioiden ostamista, joihin minulla ei ole minkäänlaista tunnesidettä. Kun hankkii kalusteen, josta on haaveillut monta vuotta, sitä ei ole tarvetta vaihtaa trendien tai mielenmuutosten mukaan. Toivon lisäksi, että laadukkaat tavarat saavat jatkaa elämäänsä vielä lastenkin kodeissa. Siksi ei ole ihan helppoa valita vain kahta  tärkeää esinettä, mutta poimin kuviin sellaiset sisustuselementit, joiden kanssa olen elänyt pisimpään. Sain Italia-aiheisen grafiikkavedoksen lahjaksi au pair -perheeltäni, jonka luona työskentelin vuoden Milanossa ylioppilaaksi päästyäni, joten se on siitä pitäen ollut jokaisen oman kotini seinällä. Artekin jakkara sen sijaan oli ensimmäinen kaluste, jonka ostin yhdessä mieheni kanssa. Nyt meillä on niitä jo kolme ja jakkaran muotoilu ja monikäyttöisyys jaksavat aina vain ihastuttaa.

(IT) Karin dal blog Tunne tilat mi ha chiesto di raccontare del mio rapporto con gli oggetti di arredamento e di scegliere i pezzi più cari che mi hanno seguito da una casa all'altra. Devo subito confessare che mi affeziono a tanti mobili e altri oggetti che abbiamo a casa. In realtà cerco di evitare di comprare cose che mi lasciano fredda. Quando si comprano cose di cui uno si sogna da tanto tempo non c'è bisogno di cambiarle secondo le mode oppure perché ci si è stancati. Spero anche che comprando prodotti di qualità li potremo un giorno passare alle figlie che se li porteranno a casa propria. Perciò mi è abbastanza difficile scegliere solo un paio di oggetti importanti ma in queste foto ci sono le due cose con cui ho vissuto più a lungo. Ho avuto il foglio di grafica "Italia" come regalo dalla famiglia presso cui ho lavorato un anno come alla pari a Milano dopo aver fatto la maturità quindi il quadro è stato appeso in tutte le mie case. Uno sgabello di Artek è stato il primo mobile che ho comprato insieme al mio marito. Ora ne abbiamo già tre e la forma e la funzionalità dello sgabello mi piacciono sempre tanto.

(EN) Karin from the blog Tunne tilat asked me to tell about my relationship with interior objects and to choose the most important things that have followed me from one home to another. I'll start by confessing that I do get emotionally attached to many of the things we have at home. When you buy a piece of furniture that you have dreamt of for years you have no need to change it when the trends change or because you got tired of it. I also hope that high quality products can one day be used also in our children's homes. It's thus not easy for me to choose just a couple of important objects but in these pictures you can see the two things that have followed me for the longest time. I got the original "Italy" art print from my au pair family in Milan where I was working for a year after finishing school. The picture has ever since been in my every home. The Artek stool is the first piece of furniture I bought together with my husband. Now we have three of them and I really love the design and the versatility of the stool.

Kirjastossa

(FI) Kävin kesälomalla eräänä iltana miehen kanssa elokuvissa Kaisaniemessä ja samalla reissulla oli oiva tilaisuus käydä kurkkaamassa, miltä Anttinen Oiva Arkkitehdit Oy:n suunnittelema yliopiston uusi pääkirjasto näyttää. Olin kuullut hehkutusta hienosta arkkitehtuurista ja sisustuksesta, joten olihan paikka pakko nähdä omin silmin. Hienolta siellä tosiaan näytti ja olisi melkein tehnyt mieli jäädä Domus lounge -tuoliin lukemaan jotain kiinnostavaa kirjaa, mutta La grande bellezza vei kuitenkin voiton.

(IT) Durante le vacanze a Helsinki sono andata una sera al cinema a Kaisaniemi con mio marito quindi avevo un'ottima possibilità di passare a vedere la nuova biblioteca centrale dell'Università di Helsinki, progettata dalla studio di architettura Anttinen Oiva. Avevo sentito che sia l'architettura che l'arredamento sono molto belli quindi volevo proprio vedere il posto in persona. Infatti il posto è impressionante ed ero tentata di sedermi su una poltrona Domus lounge e restare a leggere un libro ma La grande bellezza mi ha convinto di continuare la serata al teatro.

(EN) During our holidays in Helsinki I went with my husband one evening to the cinema in Kaisaniemi so I had the perfect opportunity to visit the new Helsinki University Main Library, designed by Anttinen Oiva Architects. I had heard that both the architecture and the interior design were really great so I definitely wanted to see the place myself. The place was in fact impressive and I was tempted to sit down on a Domus lounge chair and start reading a book but The Great Beauty convinced me to continue to the movie theater.

Klassikkokahvi

(FI) Kuvassa lauantain aamukahvi ja ruokasalin varaistuimina toimivat Artekin jakkarat E60, joista ensimmäisen hankimme jo 15 vuotta sitten. Toimivampaa ja monikäyttöisempää huonekalua saa hakea. Meillä jakkarat ovat olleet käytössä esimerkiksi pikkupöytänä olohuoneessa, yöpöytänä, eteisen istuimena ja nyt siis varaistuimina, joita käytetään tarvittaessa myös parvekkeella.

Tämän päivän Ikea-reissun jälkeen arvostan laatua jälleen entistä enemmän, sillä joudumme palaamaan liikkeeseen vaihtamaan ihan kakkoslaatuisen tuotteen. Arvatkaa harmittaako! No, onneksi huomenna on luvassa ihanien ystävien seuraa brunssilla, joten eiköhän viikonlopun saldo jää kuitenkin reilusti plussan puolelle.

(IT) Nella foto il caffèllatte del sabato mattina gli sgabelli E60 di Artek che usiamo come sedie di riserva nella sala da pranzo. Abbiamo comprato il primo sgabello 15 anni fa ed è un mobile incredibilmente funzionale e versatile. Abbiamo usato questi sgabelli per esempio in soggiorno come tavolino, in camera da letto come comodino e nell'ingresso come sedia e ora nella sala da pranzo e a volte anche sul balcone.

 Apprezzo la qualità sempre di più, anche perché siamo stati oggi da Ikea e dobbiamo tornarci per portare indietro un prodotto pieno di difetti. Che noia! Beh, meno male che domani andremo al brunch dagli amici quindi il fine settimana sarà comunque prevalentemente piacevole e rilassante.

(EN) In this picture there are my Saturday morning cup of coffee and Artek E60 stools we use as extra seats in the dining room. We bought the first stool already 15 years a go and it's an incredibly functional and versatile piece of furniture. We have used these stools as a small table in the living room, as a night stand, as a seat in the entry hall and now we're using them in the dining room and sometimes also on the balcony.

I really value good quality, especially since we went to Ikea today and have to return there and bring back a product that was full of defects. How annoying! Anyway, tomorrow we're going to have brunch with some dear friends so on the whole the weekend will be a nice and relaxing one.
