The kitchen wall is gone!

(FI) Pitkä odotus on vihdoin palkittu: remonttifirma sai edellisen kohteen siihen kuntoon, että työmiehet siirtyivät meidän talomme kimppuun. Keittiön ja käytävän välinen kantava seinä ja käytävän alaslaskettu katto saivat eilen kyytiä ja täytyy sanoa, etten melkein uskonut silmiäni, kun menin iltapäivällä katsomaan tilannetta. Pienestä koppikeittiöstä oli tullut ihanan avara tila, johon voin nyt todellakin kuvitella meidän uuden keittiön. (Keittiösuunnitelmaa voi kurkata täältä.)

Tänään asentaja kävi katkaisemassa kaasut ja vedet, joten nyt voimme purkaa myös tiskipöytäkaapiston keittiön nurkasta. Keittiön ja olohuoneen välinen seinä pitää vielä puhkaista tuosta tarjoiluluukun kohdalta, mikä sekin parantaa tilankäyttöä. Parkettifirman mies kävi tänään katsomassa tilannetta, joten nyt odotellaan sieltä tarjousta lattioista. Ilmeisesti kuitenkaan vanhaa mosaiikkia ei kannata kunnostaa, sillä siinä on paljon irtonaisia ja huonokuntoisia paloja, eikä samaa kokoa nykyään löydy valmiina. Ehkä alakertaan siis tulee yhtenäinen parkettilattia, josta olin haaveillut. 

Keittiön ja eteisen välinen aukko pienenee vähän nykyisestä, sillä sen joka reunaan tulee teräspalkki tukemaan kattoa, ja ajattelin myös laskea aukon yläreunaa muiden oviaukkojen tasalle. Näin eteistila erottuu hieman enemmän omaksi kokonaisuudekseen, vaikkei tilojen välille suljettavaa ovea tulekaan.

Nyt näitä remonttipäivityksiä rupeaa toivottavasti tulemaan vähän säännöllisesti, kun hommat alkavat edetä vauhdilla. Remppafirman mukaan muutto lokakuussa on ihan realistinen aikataulu, joten siihen tähdätään!

(IT) La lunga attesa è finalmente finita: l'impresa di costruzioni ha finito con il progetto precedente e ha iniziato a lavorare nella nostra casa. Ieri hanno abbattuto il muro tra la cucina e il corridoio nonché demolito il soffitto ribassato del corridoio. Devo dire che non riuscivo quasi a credere ai miei occhi quando sono andata a vedere la situazione ieri pomeriggio. La cucina piccolina era diventata uno spazio grande ed aperto e ora ci posso immaginare la nostra nuova cucina. (il progetto di cucina si può vedere qui.)

Oggi l'idraulico ha chiuso il gas e l'acqua quindi possiamo smontare anche il mobile lavandino che sta ancora nell'angolo della cucina. Il muro tra la cucina e il soggiorno verrà pure aperto, il che migliorerà ancora l'utilizzo dello spazio. Oggi è venuto anche un tipo a vedere i pavimenti e possiamo aspettare la loro offerta per i nuovi parquet. Sembra che non convenga restaurare il vecchio parquet, visto che ci sono tanti pezzi staccati e rovinati e la dimensione non è quella standard di oggi. Insomma, forse avremo su questo livello il parquet continuo come avevo sognato.

L'apertura tra la cucina e l'ingresso non sarà proprio tanto grande perché su tutti i lati bisogna istallare una trave di supporto. Penso anche di far costruire un po' di muro sopra in modo che sia sullo stesso livello delle altre porte. Così l'ingresso sarà un po' separato dalla cucina, anche se non si potrà chiudere con una porta.

Spero di poter scrivere in seguito post sulla ristrutturazione in modo più regolare, visto che le cose vanno avanti. Secondo la ditta è realistico pensare di fare il trasloco in ottobre. Ecco quindi cosa cercheremo di fare durante le vacanze di autunno!

(EN) The long wait has finally came to an end: our contractor finished their previous project and started to work on our house.Yesterday they removed the wall between the kitchen and the corridor and demolished the dropped ceiling in the corridor. I must say, I almost didn't believe my eyes when I went to see the situation yesterday afternoon. The small kitchen had become an open and spacious room where I can really imagine our new kitchen. (You can see the kitchen plan here.)

Today the plumber turned off the water and the gas so we can disassemble also the sink cabinet in the kitchen corner. The wall between the kitchen and the living room will be opened where there's the serving window so the space solution will be even more practical. Also the parquet company came to see the floors today so we can wait for their bid. Obviously it's not a good idea to restore the old mosaique parquet since there are lots of loose and ruined pieces of wood and the size is not today's standard. Maybe we'll have a new parquet that continues on all this level, just like I wanted.

The opening between the kitchen and the entry hall won't remain quite this open since we'll have steel beams on all sides and I also think it's a good idea to build a  little bit of wall above the opening so that the height will be the same as the other doors. This makes the entry a bit more separate even though there won't be any doors you can close.

I hope to be able to write in the future more regularly posts on the renovation, now that things are moving forward. Our contractor says it's quite realistic to think about moving in October so that's our plan for the autumn holidays!

Kitchen Plan

(FI) Uuden kodin keittiösuunnitelmat ovat edenneet jo siihen pisteeseen, että keittiön kalustesuunnitelma on valmis ja keittiö pantu tilaukseen. Keittiön meille toimitaa Küchentreff, sillä sieltä löytyi järkevään hintaan kokonaisuus, jonka saimme räätälöityä halutun laiseksi. Keittiösuunnitelman valmistuminen jo tässä vaiheessa oli tärkeää, koska vaihdamme pohjaratkaisun täysin erilaiseksi ja vesi- kaasu- ja sähkövedot täytyy tuoda remontoidessa oikealle kohdalle.

Materiaaleiltaan keittiöstä tulee hyvin yksinkertainen: valkoiset vetimettömät mattamaalatut ovet ja valkoinen kvartsitaso. Koska ikkunat ovat pohjoiseen, en edes harkinnut tänne tummempia kalusteita, ja valkoinen keittiö on klassikko, josta olen aina tykännyt. Vetimetön ratkaisu on tehty niin, että oven takana on tilaa vetää ovi auki, ovien reunoissa ei siis ole mitään uria. Huoneen takaseinälle tulee kaappeja kattoon asti, jotta säilytystila saadaan maksimoitua. Työskentelyä varten keskelle huonetta tulee 240 cm pitkä ja 100 cm syvä saareke, jonka ääreen tulee myös paikka parille baarituolille.

Lähes kaikki kodinkoneet valittiin Neffiltä, ainoastaan astianpesukone on Mielen malli. Jääkaappi täytyy vielä etsiä itse, sillä haluan sellaisen jääpalakoneettoman mallin, joka ei tule liikaa ulos kaapistosta. Integroitu jääkaappiratkaisu olisi tietysti ollut ihanteellinen, mutta yksi 60-senttinen jää-pakastinkaappi on meille liian vähän, enkä toisaalta halunnut uhrata 120 senttiä kaapiston leveydestä kahdelle vierekkäiselle kylmälaitteelle. Jenkkikaapilla siis mennään, ja toivon toisaan löytäväni sellaisen mallin, joka uppoaa mahdollisimman hyvin kaapistoon.

Erityisen onnellinen olen siitä, että saamme jälleen kaasulieden, sillä taloon tulee kaupunkikaasu jo ihan lämmitystäkin varten. Lieden ylle tulee liesituuletin, jolle vedetään poistohormi ulkoseinään. Hanaksi valitsimme Blancon mustan hanan, jossa on ulosvedettävä pää. Astianpesukone sijoittuu tiskialtaan oikealle puolelle ja altaan alla on jätevaunu. Lieden alla on leveä laatikosta ja vieressä vielä 30-senttinen apteekkikaappi maustepulloja ym. varten.

Pieniä kompromisseja keittiössä oli pakko tehdä, mutta toiminnot saatiin kuitenkin minusta ihan hyvin järjestettyä rajalliseen tilaan. Alla olevassa arkkitehdin piirroksessa näkyy, miten viereinen käytävä avataan osaksi keittiötä ja eteisessä olevat kaksi oviaukkoa yhdistetään yhdeksi suureksi aukoksi. Keittiöstä puhkaistaan lisäksi kulku olohuoneeseen kellarin oven ohi. 

Yläkerran porrastasanne pakottaa jättämään keittiön ja olohuoneen välissä sijaitsevan osan kattoa matalaksi ja korkeitten kalusteitten vasemmalle puolelle jää pätkä seinää, johon puretun seinän tilalle katonrajaan tuleva teräspalkki tukeutuu. Vanhoissa taloissa joutuu joskus tekemään tällaisia vähän outoja ratkaisuja, mutten usko, että se valmiina oikeastaan häiritsee. Joka tapauksessa pohjaratkaisusta tulee paljon toimivampi, kun keittiö avartuu ja alakerrassa pääsee kiertämään ympäri.

Kollaasiin kokosin vielä kiinteää keittiöratkaisua täydentäviä juttuja. Flosin Glo-Ball-valaisimen ajattelin sjoittaa saarekkeen toiseen päähän, sillä liesituulettimen ledivalot eivät riitä keittiö ainoaksi valonlähteeksi. Samoin Flosin Foglio-valaisin tulee portaikon vastaiselle seinälle; se antaa yleisvaloa muttei häikäise, koska valonlähteet jäävät metalliosan taakse. Artekin hyllyt ja Iris Hantverkin naulakon aion sijoittaa olohuoneen oviaukon lähelle kellarin portaita vastapäätä, sillä siihen jää pieni syvennys kahden hormirakennelman väliin.

Baarituolit tulevat tietysti saarekkeen ääreen, tikkaat ja tarjouluvaunu voisivat nekin olla kokoontaitettuina tuossa välikkötilassa. Matto tulee saarekkeen taakse vähän piiloon ja ikkunan oikealla puolella olevaan nurkkaan aion sijoittaa alimman kuvan metallihyllyn ja sen yläpuolelle mahdollisesti String Pocketin. Nurkkauksesta tulee vähän aamiaiskaapin korvike, sinne päätyvät kahvinkeittovälineet, hiilihapotuskone ja leivänpaahdin ym. eli usein tarvittavat jutut, jotka kuitenkin saarekkella häiritsisivät.

Miltäs suunnitelma vaikuttaa? Itse en malttaisi odottaa remontin valmistumista, uudessa keittiössä keittöhommat tuntuvat varmasti ihan luksukselta, kun ratkaisut on vihdoin mietitty toimiviksi ja saarekkeen ääreen mahtuu useampi kokki yhtaikaa! <3

(IT) I piani sulla cucina della nuova casa sono arrivati al punto che il progetto è fatto e la cucina è stata ordinata. La cucina viene da Küchentreff dove abbiamo trovato a prezzo ragionevole quello che volevamo. Era importante fissare il piani per la cucina già a questo punto, visto che cambieremo completamente la soluzione e l'acqua, il gas e l'elettricità devono essere portati nei punti giusti durante i lavori grandi.

I materiali scelti sono molto semplici: sportelli bianco opaco senza maniglie e un ripiano di quarzo bianco. Siccome le finestre nello spazio sono verso il nord, non ho neanche pensato di usare colori scuri, e la cucina bianca è un classico che mi è sempre piaciuto. La soluzione senza maniglie è fatta in modo che dietro gli sportelli c'è un po' di spazio per infilarci la mano. Sul muro di dietro ci saranno sportelli fino al soffitto per utilizzare lo spazio al meglio. Nel centro della stanza ci sarà un isola di cucina con lunghezza di 240 cm e profondità di 100 cm e posto per un paio di sgabelli.

Quasi tutti gli elettrodomestici saranno della marca Neff, soltanto la lavastoviglie è di Miele. Il frigorifero lo dovrò ancora cercare, voglio trovare un modello che non esca troppo dai mobili. L'ideale sarebbe naturalmente una soluzione ad incasso ma un frigo/congelatore largo 60 cm non ci basta e non volevo utilizzare 120 cm di spazio,. Quindi la soluzione sarà un frigo largo 90 cm, speriamo che si trovi un modello che ci stia bene.

Sono specialmente contenta del fatto che avremo di nuovo una cucina a gas, la casa ha anche l'impianto di riscaldamento a gas. Sopra i fornelli ci sarà una cappa aspirante per cui si farà un buco nel muro. Il rubinetto sarà un modello nero di Blanco con una doccetta estraibile. La lavastoviglie sarà a destra del lavandino e sotto il lavandino ci sarà un cassetto con cestini per la raccolta differenziata. Sotto i fornelli ci sono cassetti larghi e accanto c'è ancora un armadietto estraibile per le bottiglie d'olio ecc.

Qualche piccolo compromesso l'abbiamo dovuto fare ma mi sembra che siamo riusciti a posizionare tutte le funzioni piuttosto bene in uno spazio limitato. Nel disegno del nostro architetto si vede come il corridoio accanto diventa parte della cucina e le due aperture verso l'ingresso diventano un'apertura grande. Inoltre faremo un'apertura nel muro del soggiorno in modo che ci si riesca a passare direttamente dietro la porta della scala della cantina.

Il pianerottolo del piano di sopra fa sì che dovremo lasciare il soffitto abbassato tra la cucina e il soggiorno e a sinistra dei mobili alti ci resterà un pezzetto di muro per dare appoggio alla trave in acciaio. Nelle vecchie case servono a volte soluzioni un po' strane ma non credo darà fastidio una volta finito tutto. In ogni caso la nuova soluzione sarà molto più funzionale con la cucina più ampia e il passaggio diretto dalla cucina al soggiorno.

Ho raccolto nel collage altri elementi che metteremo nella cucina. La lampada Glo-Ball di Flos la metteremo sopra l'isola di cucina, visto che le luci a led della cappa aspirante non basteranno per illuminare tutta la stanza. La lampada Foglio, pure quella di Flos, troverá un posto sul muro accanto alla scala. Mi piace il fatto che illumini senza abbagliare. Le mensole di Artek e l'appendiabiti di Iris Hantverk li penso di mettere di fronte alla porta della cantina tra le due colonne.

Gli sgabelli da bar staranno naturalmente accanto all'isola, la scaletta e il carrello per servire possono essere chiusi sotto le mensole di Artek. Il tappeto lo metterei un po' nascosto dietro l'isola per proteggere il pavimento e nell'angolo a destra della finestra penso di mettere il sideboard in metallo che si vede nell'ultima foto, possibilmente con la mensola String Pocket di sopra. Quest'angolo sarà un posto dove tenere le cose come le caffettiere, il Soda Stream, il tostapane ecc, insomma le cose che servono spesso ma che darebbero fastidio sull'isola.

Come vi sembra il piano? Io non vedo l'ora di avere la cucina pronta, sarà veramente un lusso lavorarci! Finalmente avremo di nuovo una cucina con soluzioni pratiche e spazio per varie persone per lavorare insieme!  <3

(EN) The new home kitchen plan has arrived to a point where the planning is done and the kitchen has been ordered. We will get the kitchen from Küchentreff where we found the chance to have the solutions we wanted at a reasonable price. It was important to have the kitchen plans ready this early since we're completely changing the solutions and we need to bring the water, gas and electricity to the righg places.

The materials we chose are quite simple: white painted doors without handles and white quartz tops. Since the windows of this space face north, I never even thought of using darker colours, and a white kitchen is a classic I have always loved. The handleless solution is made in a way that there's some space behind the doors so you can simply pull the door open with your hand. The back wall cupboards will continue till the ceiling so we will have as much storage space as possible. In the middle of the room we'll have a 240 cm long and 100 cm wide kitchen island with a place for a couple of bar stools.

Almost all the kitchen appliances will be by Neff, only the dishwasher is by Miele. I still need to find the right fridge, since I want a model that isn't much deeper than the cupboards. Obviously my first choice would have been perfect having built-in fridge and freezer but just one 60 cm wide wouldn't be enough and I didn't want to sacrifice 120 cm of space. So a 90 cm wide fridge will have to do and I really hope to find a model that disappears a bit more to the cupboards.

I'm especially happy that we'll have a gas stove, the house is even heated with gas. Above the stove we'll have an extractor hood, we'll just need to do a hole in the wall. The mixer tap we chose is a Blanco model with extendable spray head. The dishwasher is on the right side of the sink and below the sink there's a drawer with recycling bins. Under the stove there are wide drawers and next to it a 30 cm slide out cabinet for oil bottles etc.

Small compromises were necessary but I do think that we managed to organize all the functions pretty well in the limited space. In the architect drawing you can see how the corridor next to kitchen becomes part of it and the two openings to the entry hall become just a big one. An opening from the kitchen to the living room, passing in front of the basement door will also be created.

The upstairs stair landing forces us to leave a lowered ceiling in the space leading from the kitchen to the living room and some wall will remain on the left side of the cabinet wall to support the steel beam that will be put where the wall used to be. In an old house you sometimes need to do some awkward solutions but I'm sure they won't disturb once everything is done. Anyhow, the downstairs solution will be much more functional with the bigger kitchen and the possibility to go directly from the kitchen to the living room.

In the collage I put some things that will complete the kitchen design. The Glo-Ball light by Flos will be hung over the kitchen island, since the hood lights won't be enough for illuminating the whole space. The Foglio light, also by Flos, will find a place on the wall against the stairs. I like the fact that it illuminates without dazzling since the lamps remain behind the metal leaf. The Artek shelves and the Iris Hantverk coat rack will be put in front of the basement door between the two columns.

The bar stools will be used by the kitchen island and the ladder and the tea trolley could be kept under the Artek shelves. The carpet will be hidden behind the island and in the corner on the right of the window I want to put the metal shelf you can see in the last picture, possible with the String Pocket shelf above it. This corner will be kind of a breakfast corner, a place to keep coffee pots, the toaster and other things you need often but would disturb on the island top.

So, what do you think? I can't wait having the kitchen ready, it will be such a luxury cooking there. Finally we'll have again a real family kitchen with functional solutions and space for more people to work together! <3

Ja taas juhlittiin

(FI) Meidän perheessä on kesällä aina melkoinen juhlaputki, sillä kaikkien syntymäpäivät ajoittuvat kesäkuukausille ja vielä hääpäiväkin on heinäkuussa. Eilen kuopus täytti 12 vuotta ja toivoi synttärikakuksi perinteisen kermakakun sijaan ranskalaista suklaakakkua. Kakusta tuli harvinaisen ruma, sillä sen pinta lohkeili suklaakuorrutuksen sekaan, mutta kaunis kattaus tekee paljon ja kun kakkuviipaleen päälle lisäsi ennen syömistä reilusti vadelmakastiketta ja kermavaahtoa, epätasainen pinta katosi näkyvistä. Näiden kuvien ottamisen jälkeen kakun päälle aseteltiin myös 12 kynttilää puhaltamista varten. Synttärilahjaksi tytär sai uuden isomman polkupyörän, joka käytiin jo lauantaina valitsemassa ja tilaamassa pyöräliikkeestä. Melkeinpä haluaisin itsellenikin yhä suloisen pastellisen turkoosin menopelin :)

(IT) In estate abbiamo sempre una festa dopo l'altra nella nostra famiglia, visto che abbiamo tutti il compleanno nei mesi estivi e anche il nostro anniversario di matrimonio è in luglio. Ieri la nostra secondogenita ha compiuto 12 anni e ha voluto una torta francese al cioccolato invece della solita torta da compleanno. Il risultato non è stato per nulla bello perché la superficie della torta si sbriciolava quando spalmavo la glassa, ma apparecchiare in modo bello aiuta sempre e ricoperta di salsa ai lamponi e panna montata non si vedeva più com'era fatta la torta. Dopo aver scattato queste foto abbiamo pure aggiunto le 12 candeline. Come regalo di compleanno le abbiamo comprato una bici nuova che è stata scelta e ordinata in un negozio di biciclette già sabato. Quasi quasi ne vorrei anch'io una cosi carina in color turchese pastello chiaro. :)

(EN) During the summer we have one celebration after another in the family because we all have our birthdays in the summer months and also our wedding anniversary is in July. Yesterday our younger daughter had her 12th birthday and asked for a French chocolate cake instead of a more traditional birthday cake. The result was really ugly since the surface crumbled while I spread the melted chocolate glaze on it, but when you added some raspberry sauce and whipped cream on your slice you really couldn't see the cake anymore. After taking these pictures we also put 12 candles on the cake. The birthday present was a new bicycle that was already chosen and ordered at a store on Saturday. I actually wouldn't mind having a similar cute pastel turquoise bike myself. :)

DIY paperinkeräyskassi

(FI) Joskus jotakin ideaa pitää haudutella useamman vuoden ajan, ennen kuin vihdoin tulee inspiraatio toteuttaa se (tai vaihtoehtoisesti huomaa, ettei se ollutkaan toteuttamisen arvoinen). Minä olin optimistisesti jemmannut aika pitkään kangaskasassa vanhoja mustia rakkaita pellavahousuja, joita olin käyttänyt niin ahkerasti, että ne olivat kuluneet parista paikkaa puhki. Housut olivat malliltaan suorat ja leveälahkeiset ja koska lahkeet olivat alhaalta vielä hyvässä kunnossa, en heittänyt housuja pois vaan ajattelin käyttää kangasta johonkin. Vähitellen idea jalostui paperinkeräyskassiksi, joka tulisi paperipussin tilalle puiseen telineeseen. Muutaman vuoden jahkailun jälkeen sain viimein kesällä ompeluinspiraation ja kassi valmistui parissa tunnissa. Leikkasin lahkeet toisesta sivusta auki ja lahkeen alareunan käänne on nyt kassin yläreunana. Kaavana käytin paperikassia, jonka mittoja vähän muokkasin. Kangaskassin yläreunaan tuli pitkille sivuille puiset rimat, joiden pujotusta varten tein saumaan pienen aukon, minkä jälkeen ompelin muualle reunaan vahvistusompeleen. Rimat saa siis edelleen aukoista ulos kassin pesua varten. Kyllähän tuo musta pellavakassi vähän siistimmältä näyttää keittiössä kuin kaupan mainospaperikassit, vai mitä?

(IT) A volte bisogna far maturare un'idea per vari anni prima che ti viene l'ispirazione per realizzarla (oppure ci si accorge che non ne vale la pena). Io avevo conservato a lungo nella pila delle stoffe un vecchio paio di pantalone neri che avevo usato tanto che c'erano un paio di buchi. Il modello era stretto e largo e siccome nelle gambe erano ancora in buone condizioni non li ho buttati via ma ho pensato di utilizzare la stoffa per qualche cosa Piano piano è nata l'idea di farci un sacco per la carta da riciclare che avrebbe sostituito i sacci di carta nel portasacco in legno chiaro. Dopo aver esitato per qualche anno mi sono finalmente messa al lavoro quest'estate e il sacco è stato pronto in un paio d'ore. Ho tagliato i lati dei pantaloni e l'orlo è ora la parte di sopra del sacco. Ho usato come modello un sacco di carta però ho modificato un po' le dimensioni. Dentro i lati lunghi c'è uno stecco di legno come supporto in alto. Ho fatto un buco nella cucitura per infilarli e poi ho rinforzato la cuciture altrove. Gli stecchi si possono quindi tirare fuori per mettere il sacco a lavare. Certo che un sacco in lino nero sta molto meglio in cucina dei sacchi di carta del supermercato, non vi pare?

(EN) Sometimes you need to incubate an idea for some years before you get the inspiration to carry it out (or maybe realize that it's not worth it after all). I had conserved for a long time in my fabric pile an old pair of black linen trousers that I had used so much that there were a couple of holes in them. The model was wide and straight and legs were still in such a good shape that I didn't throw the trousers away but decided to use the fabric for something. At some point I got the idea that I could sew a linen bag that could replace the paper bag in the wooden rack we have in the kitchen for recycling paper. After a few years hesitation I finally found the sewing inspiration this summer and the linen bag was ready in a couple of hours. I cut the legs open and the hem is now the top of the bag. I used a paper bag as a model but modified the measures a bit. Inside the long sides there a wooden stick to support the opening. I cut a hole in the seam for putting the sticks in and strengthened the seam next to them. So it's possible to take the sticks out if you need to wash the bag. A black linen bag sure looks a bit better in the kitchen than some paper bag you get from the supermarket, don't you think?

Toimivuutta keittiöön

(FI) Onkohan se sen merkki, että pian on aika muuttaa tästä talosta pois, kun melkein neljä vuotta vaivanneet sisustusongelmat ovat yhtäkkiä alkaneet ratketa ja osaset loksahtaa paikoilleen? Keittiön osalta toimivan ratkaisun löytymistä edesauttoi liitoksista rikki mennyt baarituoli, jonka vuoksi piti miettiä uusia istuimia keittiöön. Vanhoja baarituoleja emme itse asiassa olleet itse valinneet ja hankkineet, vaan Suomen asuntomme edelliset omistajat jättivät ne meille ja ne vain jäivät käyttöön. Nyt kun uusien hankinta oli ajankohtainen, halusin löytää sellaiset tuolit, joista olisi iloa pitkäksi aikaa ja jotka sopisivat myös oman makumme mukaiseen moderniin ja linjakkaaseen keittiöön.

Eri tuolimalleja vertailtuani ihastuin Hayn About a Stool -tuoliin, jonka hintakin oli varsin kohtuullinen.  Kun sitten kävin katsomassa tuoleja Hayn liikkeessä (täällä Bremenissä on sellainen), tajusin niiden olevan auttamatta liian suurikokoiset keittiöömme. Kurja juttu, mutta minkäs teet. Kunnes noin viikko sitten päätin katsoa, miltä näyttäisi, jos kääntäisinkin Ikean saarekkeen ikkunaseinälle. Ja kappas, keittiöstähän tulikin yhtäkkiä ihan tilavan tuntuinen, jääkaapin eteen jäi kunnolla tilaa, mattokin sopi yhä lattialle ja, mikä parasta, saarekkeen eteen voi sijoittaa vähän reilummankin kokoiset baarituolit ilman, että ne haittaavat kulkua parvekkeelle. Kun löysin vielä nettikaupan, jolla oli tuoleja heti varastossa Hayn oman liikkeen kuukauden toimitusajan sijaan, lähtivät ne saman tien tilaukseen.

Lähetys saapui muutamassa päivässä, ja nyt nautimme entistä huomattavasti toimivammasta keittiöstä ja supermukavista tuoleista. Aiemmin pöydän kohdalla sijainnutta kattovalaisinta nostin hieman ylemmäs, jottei ole sellainen tunne, että siihen lyö päänsä jakkaralle istuutuessa. Vaikkei pyökkikaapistoille ja muille pinnoille tehty mitään, koko keittiö tuntuu käyneen läpi kasvojenkohotuksen ja siirtyneen vihdoin 2000-luvulle. Ikkunalle haaveilen vielä valkoisesta pellavalaskosverhosta tai -valelaskosverkosta. Pitäisiköhän yrittää ommella sellainen itse, kun sopivaa kangastakin löytyisi komerosta?

(IT) Significa forse che presto sarà l'ora di cambiare casa quando dopo quasi quattro anni comincio a trovare soluzioni ai problemi di arredo persistenti in questa casa? In cucina il processo è iniziato quando la struttura di uno degli sgabelli si è rotta e dovevamo cercare nuove sedie per sostituirli. In realtà non avevamo mai scelto e comprato gli sgabelli vecchi ma ci erano stati lasciati dagli ex proprietari della nostra casa in Finlandia e sono semplicemente rimasti in uso. Ora, visto che bisognava comprare sgabelli nuovi, volevo trovare un modello che andasse bene anche in una cucina moderna e lineare come piace a noi. 

Dopo aver paragonato tanti modelli mi piacevano di più gli sgabelli About a Stool di Hay e anche il prezzo era ragionevole. Solo che quando sono andata a vederli nel negozio di Hay (sì, ce l'abbiamo qui a Brema) ho capito che erano veramente troppo grandi per la nostra cucina. Peccato ma nulla da fare. Finché circa una settimana fa non mi è venuta l'idea di vedere come l'isola da cucina starebbe girata lungo la parete con la finestra. Che sorpresa, la cucina sembrava subito spaziosa, c'era molto di più spazio davanti al frigorifero, il tappeto ci stava pure e, la cosa più bella, ora c'era spazio a sufficienza anche per gli sgabelli più grandi senza bloccare il passaggio verso il balcone. Ho pure trovato un negozio online che aveva gli sgabelli già in magazzino mentre nel negozio di Hay si dovevano ordinare con un tempo di consegna di un mese. 

L'ordine è arrivato in pochi giorni e ora ci godiamo una cucina molto più funzionale e gli sgabelli belli e comodissimi. Ho alzato un po' la lampada che prima pendeva sopra l'isola, in modo che uno non deve temere di batterci la testa quando si siede. Anche se non abbiamo fatto nulla agli sportelli e alle superfici, la cucina sembra essersi rinfrescata e arrivata finalmente negli anni 2000. Vorrei ancora avere una tenda a baccherro in lino bianco alla finestra. Forse dovrei provare a cucirla io, visto che avrei già della stoffa adatta?

(EN) I wonder could it be a sign that we'll be moving out soon if I have suddenly started finding solutions to decoration problems we have had in this house for almost four years? In the kitchen the problem solving process started when the structure of one of the bar stools broke and we had to start looking for new ones. Actually, we hadn't chosen and bought the old stools but the previous owners of our home in Finland left them to use and they just remained in use. Now that we needed to buy new ones I wanted to find something that we would use for a long time and that would look good also in a sleek and modern kitchen that's made according to our own taste.

After comparing various models I fell in love with About a Stool by Hay and also the price was pretty reasonable. When I went to see the stools at the Hay store (yes, we have one here in Bremen), I noticed that they were far too big for our kitchen. Real bummer, but that's life. But then about a week ago I got an idea and decided to try and turn the Ikea kitchen island around. Incredible, the kitchen seemed immediately much more spacious, there was lots of space in front of the fridge, the rug still fit in the space and, best of all, you could have bigger stools without blocking the way to the balcony. I even found an online store that had the stools already in stock while at the Hay store you needed to order them and wait for a month or so.

The package arrived in a few days and now we're enjoying a more functional kitchen plus really comfortable bar stools. I lifted a bit the pendant that used to hang above the kitchen island so you don't feel like you will hit your head on it when you sit down. We didn't do anything to the kitchen cabinets or other surfaces in the space and it still feels like the kitchen has undergone a facelift and finally moved to the 21st Century. I would still love to add a white linen Roman blinds in the window. Maybe I should try and sew one myself since I already have some perfect linen fabric for it?

(FI) Salone del mobilen tämän vuoden ohjelmaan kuului Eurocucina-keittiömessut, joita kiertelin pariinkin otteeseen. Kun ei ollut tarvetta tutustua viimeisiin teknisiin ratkaisuihin ja kodinkoneisiin, keittiöosastojen kiertely oli leppoisaa puuhaa, ja vallitsevat trendit hahmottuivat varsin nopeasti.

Tummanruskea puu, tumma harmaa ja tummat sävyt yleensäkin, erilaiset kivi- ja metallipinnat ja lämpimät beigen sävyt tekevät voimakkaasti tuloaan keittiöiden sisustukseen. Monella osastolla näkyi isoja ja näyttäviä avohyllyratkaisuja. Valkoiset keittiöt olivat todellakin vähemmistön asemassa. Yksi harvoista oli Karim Rashidin Rationalille suunnittelema keittiö, jossa vetimet oli integroitu laatikoiden etulevyjen yläreunan muotoiluun. Selvä trendi oli myös yhteistyö tunnettujen suunnittelijoiden kanssa. Dada-keittiöt oli päästänyt asialle Armanin, ja tuloksena oli mm. saareke, jonka valtava massiivinen kivitaso oli tehty kahdesta osasta. Nämä osat liukuivat syrjään paljastaen altaan kuparisen metallipinnan, johon oli integroitu liesitaso ja allas.

Keittiötiloissa oli todella kauniita valaisimia, valtavia kattokruunuja tai savulasisia riippuvalaisimia. Valdesignin osasto oli niin upeasti stailattu, että vietin siellä jonkin aikaa kierrellen ja katsellen kaikkia jännittäviä yksityiskohtia. Leipäasetelmakin oli kuin suoraan kuvataiteesta (ja huomatkaa myös Artekin baarituoli).

Pari viimeistä keittiökuvaa on messujen ulkopuolelta, Milanon keskustassa sijaitsevalta Boffin showroomilta. Alemmassa kuvassa näkyvässä mallikeittiössä kaasupolttimot on upotettu suoraan terästasoon, ja kun niiden alla olevan laatikon avasi, sen sisältä löytyi sisustan valaiseva ledivalonauha. Lienee sanomattakin selvää, että kokoa keittiöillä oli vähintään kolmen meidän kodin huoneen verran ;)

Ensi messuilla yritän todellakin muistaa aina ottaa kuvan osaston pystyttäjän nimestä, jos jotakin siellä kuvaan. Meni nimittäin tunti ja toinenkin, kun selvitin, minkä valmistajan keittiöitä muutamassa kuvassa oli... Ihan turha luulla, että kotona enää muistaa jokaisen kuvan alkuperän, kun niitä kertyy muistikortille satoja. Pahoin pelkään, että seuraavaksi tuskailen kylpyhuonekuvien kanssa.

(IT) Nel programma del Salone del mobile c'era quest'anno Eurocucina e naturalmente sono andata a vederla. Siccome non avevo bisogno di esplorare ogni soluzione tecnica oppure vedere gli ultimi elettrodomestici ho potuto girare tranquilla e non ci voleva molto a capire i trend attuali.

Il legno scuro tipo noce, il grigio scuro e le sfumature scure in generale, le superfici in pietra e in metallo e le calorose sfumature del beige stanno arrivando nell'arredo delle cucine. Tanti stand avevano dei grandi scaffali aperti. Le cucine bianche erano proprio una minoranza. Una delle poche era la cucina che Karim Rashid aveva progettato per Rational e in cui la maniglia era integrata nella forma del bordo del pannello frontale dei cassetti. Chiaramente è un trend anche collaborare con designer famosi. Dada l'aveva fatto con Armani e come risultato presentavano tra l'altro un'isola di cucina che aveva un massiccio piano in pietra. Questo piano era fatto in due pezzi che si spostavano e rivelavano un ripiano in rame nonché il piano cottura e il lavandino.

Gli spazi erano spesso illuminati da enormi lampadari oppure lampade in sospensione in vetro fumè. Lo styling nello stand di Valdesign era così bello che ci sono stata per un bel po' a guardare tutti i dettagli. La composizione dei panini sembrava essere direttamente da un quadro (e notate anche lo sgabello alto di Artek).

Le ultime due foto di cucine sono dal Fuorisalone, allo showroom di Boffi in centro città. La cucina nell'ultima foto aveva i fornelli istallati dirittamente su un piano di acciaio e quando si apriva il cassetto di sotto si accendeva una striscia di luce led che illuminava l'interno. Penso che non devo neanche dire che le dimensioni delle cucine corrispondevano alla superficie di almeno tre stanze nella nostra casa ;)

Alla prossima fiera dovrò veramente ricordarmi di fare sempre una foto del nome della ditta se faccio foto in uno stand. Ho passato parecchio tempo a cercare il produttore della cucina in alcune foto... Inutile pensare che tanto me lo ricorderò quando si fanno centinaia di foto. Temo che dovrò fare le stesse ricerche anche con le foto sulle soluzioni bagno.

(EN) This year part of the Milan Furniture Fair was Eurocucine that I obviously went to visit. I didn't need to see all the latest tecnical solutions and appliances so I could just walk around without any stress and it didn't take long before I had detected the most important trends.

Dark wood, dark grey and other dark colours, stone and metal surfaces and warm beige hues are coming to the kitchen decor. Lots of stands showed also really big open shelf solutions. White kitchens were a small minority. One example of them was the kitchen Karim Rashid had designed for Rational. He had cleverly integrated the handle in the drawers' front panel profile. It's clearly also a trend to collaborate with famous designers. Dada kitchens had Armani as their designer and the result was, among other things, a kitchen island with a massive stone countertop. The countertop was made of two parts that slided aside revealing a brass surface and a hidden hob and washbasin.

There were huge chandeliers and pendant lights with smoked glass globes everywhere. The styling in the Valdesign stand was so nice that I spent quite a long time there looking at all the interesting details. The still life with bread rolls was like in a painting (and notice also the Artek bar stool).

The last two kitchen pictures are actually from the Boffi showroom in the center of Milan. The kitchen in the secomd picture had the gas burners installed directly onto a steel worktop and if you opened the drawer underneath a led light strip illuminated the inside. I'm sure I don't even need to mention that the kitchens had all surfaces as big as at least three rooms in our house ;)

During the next fair I really need to remember to take a picture of the company names if I take pictures in their stands. I spent lots of time searching for the producers of some of the kitchens in my photos... It's no use thinking that I will remember their names at home when you end up taking hundreds of pictures. I'm afraid it will be the same with the bathroom pictures.

(FI) Meillä kokataan joka päivä vähintään yksi lämmin ateria tuoreista raaka-aineista, parhaimpina kaksi, ja innokkaita leipureita perheestä löytyy useampi, joten keittiö on todella kodin sydän ja eräs tärkeimmistä tiloista. Täällä vuokrakodissa se ei vain valitettavasti ole toimivuudeltaan eikä estetiikaltaan läheskään sellainen kuin toivoisimme. Tila on ensinnäkin ahdas ja työtasoja ihan olemattomasti, vaikka tilannetta hieman parantaa Ikeasta hommaamamme apupöytä. Lisäksi kalusteratkaisu on suunniteltu huonosti, sillä kulmassa sijaitseva tiskiallas on todella hankala, jos keittiössä on useampi henkilö yhtaikaa hommissa, ja kun avaa tiskikoneen, ei pääse altaan alla oleville roskiksille. Ei siis ihme, että haaveilen jo siitä, millaisen keittiön haluan seuraavaan omaan kotiin.

Viime päivinä olenkin huvitellut etsien homifyn sivuilta isnpiroivia keittiökuvia, ja vaikka monen muun asian suhteen mieluisia vaihtoehtoja löytyy useita, haluan seuraavaan keittiöön ehdottomasti ison saarekkeen, jonka ääressä mahtuu työskentelemään isollakin porukalla. Tila ja sen arkkitehtuuri tietysti määrittävät osaltaan, millainen ratkaisu on toimivin, mutta asuntokaupoille lähtiessä riittävän iso keittiö on omalla vaatimuslistallani ihan kärkipäässä. Unelmakeittiössäni olisi myös valoisaa, sillä iso lasiovi tai kokonainen lasiseinä johtaisi suoraan terassille tai pihalle. Kuten kuvista huomaa,  minua vetävät puoleensa moderni tyyli, valkoinen, musta ja puu, ja mausteeksi ottaisin mielelläni vähän terästä, kiveä tai rouheaa betonia. Kaasuliesi, kaunis hana ja muutama ihana designvalaisin täydentäisivät keittiön. Eiköhän näistä aineksista saisi meille tyylikkään ja toimivan unelmakeittiön!

(IT)  A casa nostra si cucina ogni giorno un pasto caldo partendo da ingredienti freschi, tante volte anche due, e ci piace anche preparare dolci, quindi la cucina è proprio il cuore della casa e uno degli spazi più importanti. Ora che abitiamo in affitto la cucina non è purtroppo per nulla come vorremmo, né dal punto di vista estetico né da quello funzionale. Lo spazio è innanzitutto piccolo e i piani di lavoro davvero pochi anche se l'isoletta che abbiamo preso da Ikea aiuta un po'. Inoltre la soluzione non è stata progettata bene perché il lavandino situato in angolo è veramente scomodo se c'è più di una persona a lavorare in cucina e quando si apre la lavastoviglie non si arriva ai cestini per la spazzatura situati sotto il lavandino. Non è quindi strano se sto già pensando a come dovrebbe essere la cucina nella prossima casa.

Negli ultimi giorni mi sono divertita a cercare nel sito di homify immagini di cucine che mi ispirano e, anche se per il resto posso immaginare varie soluzioni che mi piacciono, una cosa è sicura: voglio assolutamente una cucina con isola talmente grande che possiamo volendo cucinare tutti insieme. È chiaro che anche l'architettura definisce la soluzione più funzionale ma una cucina grande è in cima alla mia lista di requisiti per quando cominceremo a cercare la futura casa. La mia cucina dei sogni sarebbe luminosa perché una grande porta di vetro o anche un'intera parete di vetro si aprirebbe direttamente sulla terrazza o sul giardino. Come ci si accorge dalle foto, mi attirano lo stile moderno, i colori bianco e nero e il legno e in piccole quantità l'acciaio, la pietra oppure il cemento ruvido. Infine aggiungerei una cucina a gas, un rubinetto bello e qualche lampada di design. Con questi ingredienti potremmo realizzare una cucina elegante e funzionale, insomma la cucina dei sogni!

(EN) We cook every day at home at least one warm meal from fresh ingredients, some days even two, so the kitchen really is the heart of our home and one of its most important spaces. Now that we're renting, the kitchen is far from what we would want it to be, both functionally and estetically. First of all, the space is quite small and there's not enough countertop space even though a small Ikea kitchen island helps a little. Secondly, the kitchen solution is not designed well at all. The sink situated in a corner is really unpractical if there is more than one person working in the kitchen and when you open the dishwasher you can't reach the trash bins under the sink. No wonder that I'm already thinking of what kind of a kitchen I want to have in our next home.

During the last days I have been having fun looking for inspiring pictures on the homify site and, even though there are various solutions that I quite like, I absolutely want to have a really big kitchen island so that we have enough space to cook all together. It's clear that also the space and it's architecture define the kitchen solution but a big enough kitchen is really high on my list when we start looking for a new home. My dream kitchen would be full of light thanks to a big glass door or even glass wall that opens directly to a terrace or garden. As you can notice from the pictures, I'm drawn to modern style, white, black and wood and would spice things up with some stainless steel, stone or concrete.  At the end I would add a gas stove, a nice tap and some design lamps. These elements would surely make a beautiful and functional kitchen that would fulfill my dreams!
