Monday Magnolias

(FI) Poikkesin tänään lähikukkakaupassa katsomassa, löytyisikö sieltä magnolian oksia. No, löytyihän niitä, mutta oksat myytiin valtavissa kimpuissa.

(EN) Today I visited to florist to see if she had any magnolia branches. Well, she had but they were sold in enormous bunches. Now we have magnolias both in the living room and on the dining room table. I put in the smaller vases on the dining table branches that I removed from the big ones, since they made it difficult to fit the branches in a vase. I didn't want to through the away, there are so many buds in them as well.

I added warm water to the vases and the Marimekko Urna vase became misted for some time as you can see in the photos. I also added some flower food, it should help the buds to open. Let's hope lots of flowers will open this time, sometime I haven't had much luck with them.

The pink Asa ball was is a flea market find, I think i paid one euro for it. I also bought some hand cream on the coffee table. When you're renovating the hands get so dry that the skin starts to hurt. I hope I'll remember to add cream more often when I don't need to go and get it from the bedroom or from the bathroom.

On thing I realized when I was putting the branches in the vases is that, besides being able to renovate the house according to our own wishes (well, at least as much as the budget allows), we can also plant in the garden what we want, even an own magnolia tree. That's something we really need to consider.

One more thing: today has been a wonderful sunny day with 10 degrees and smell of spring in the air. Maybe I won't need my down jacket anymore before next winter! <3

(EN) I promised to continue with another post about the Furniture fair but I can't resist showing you first our first floor corridor where I have done some changes since it last appeared here on the blog. The flower pictures have been replaced with posters and the latest addition is a bench that I found at Summer House. I really brings a lot of warmth the this dark and grim space and offers also a place where you can lay something down for a while. I'm sure you will agree that it doesn't matter that you can't close the staircase door anymore without moving the bench. It really a question of one or two centimeters... ;) In the vase there's a part of the magnolia branch I got this morning from the florist's. The branch was so big that it's now devided in three vases. I'm still considering weather I want to put here Susan Elo's Fly lamp that we used to have in the dining room. It would for sure look much nicer than the spot light that came with the house. (I would really love to remove also the wall-to-wall carpet since it's obvious that under it there's an old wooden floor!) What do you think about adding country style pieces like the bench to a modern interior?

Enemmän on enemmän

P.S. Ricordatevi di partecipare al concorso!

(EN) Actually I wanted to show today the new cushion covers I sewed from some gray linen bought at Ikea  but after last day's rain I didn't find in the garden any nice flower to put on the coffee table so I decided to pop over to the florist's. Then I couldn't decide which flower I liked best and you can see the result on the table. I would have wanted to buy all the wonderful flowers they had once again in the shop. Well, the cushions on the sofa ends are still visible and luckily we have plenty of vases. Flowers then are never too many. :)

P.S. Don't forget to participate to my giveaway!

Sarita Koivukosken vaalean turkoosin keramiikkalautasenkin olen ostanut jo monta vuotta sitten.

(EN) During the week there were a couple of really dark and cloudy days and I started feeling like I needed something colourful at home to cheer me up. Luckily I know myself well enough and don't run to buy new cushion covers or other stuff like that when in this frame of mind but just pop out to the the florist or take out something colourful I have hidden in a closet. This time a bought a bouquet with one of every flower I liked and put the flowers in an big balloon glass design by Saara Hopea for Nuutajärvi. The light turquoise handmade plate by Sarita Koivukoski I have bought some years ago. This amount of colour was quite enough this time and I think the next flowers will be white. Today instead the weather was just beautiful and we have finished doing a spring cleaning on the balcony and in the garden. I hope the weeds will grow a little less this summer now that I have weeded already at this point. Has it happened to anyone else that when you start taking care of a somewhat neglected garden and fertilizing and turning the soil the first thing to thrive are the weeds? Have a lovely Sunday evening and remember to enter the giveaway!

(EN) There's been a winter storm outside all the weekend with also some damage around in the city but in our living room there's almost a spring feeling. I bought these branches at the nearby florist's and now lots of beautiful pink flowers are opening. After removing all the Christmas decoration and throwing out the Christmas tree the whole room feels really spacious and calm. I took these pictures actually yesterday but I haven't had time to sit by the computer so I'm sending my photo greetings to Ninja and all the Saturday Coffee Club with one day's delay. Have a nice new week!

Koristelua

Joko teillä on joulukoristelut aloitettu? Mukavaa viikonloppua!

Buon fine settimana!

(EN) During the week we took the Christmas decoration boxes from the cellar and I bought some Christmassy flowers at the nearby flower shop. I intended to put the branches with red berries in one vase and the white amaryllis in another but the amaryllis stems were so thick that three of them just didn't fit in a vase. I found a star made of driftwood at Summer House and added on the coffee table around the ceramic cone some real cones and tealight holders. There's also a paper star in the living room window and you can see a picture of it on Instagram. The star that I want to put in the guest room window is still hiding in some box, though. Have you already started decorating the home for Christmas? Have a nice weekend!

Sohvapöydällä

(FI) Olohuoneen piristyksenä on tällä hetkellä jännittävän näköinen kaksivärinen hortensian kukka. Kukka löytyi lähikukkakaupasta ja vihreät suikalemaiset lehdet hain omalta pihalta. Valkoinen Lorenz Hutschenreutherin maljakko on peräisin tietenkin kirppikseltä.

(EN) On the coffee table there's at the moment a hydrangea flower that has a really interesting colour. I found the flower at the nearby florist's and the thin green leaves are from our garden. The white Lorenz Hutschenreuther vase is from the flea market.

25 April 2014

Kevään ensimmäiset

(FI) Nyt se on alkanut, nimittäin pionikausi kukkakaupassa, ja tokihan kyseisiä ihanuuksia täytyi ostaa heti kunnon kimppu. Toivottavasti nämä nuppuiset pionit jaksavat aueta maljakossa.

(EN) They peonies have finally arrived at the nearby flower shop and I have to buy a big bunch of them. I really hope the buds will open in the vase. The living room got a bit lighter when I removed the dark knitted cushions we had on the couch and also the sheep skin. They can now wait for the next winter period that will arrive only after a really long and hot summer, right?
I have already started selecting and organizing the picture I took in London so hopefully I'll write the first post on our trip during the weekend. And there's still time until Sunday to take part in the give-away where you can win a vintage vase!

Perjantaipuska

Valkoinen maljakko on löytö vastapäisestä antiikkiliikkeestä.

(EN)Yesterday the sun was shining and it was so warm that my daughters went to the nearby Italian ice cream shop for the first time this spring. Today it's raining again so some flower pictures are in order. I found the white vase from the antique shop across the street. The vase is produced by Edelstein Bavaria and the ornament was designed by Kurt Wendler. The antique shop is a real treasure trove and I have to go there sometime and take some time to have a good look around since behind the actual shop there are several rooms full of all kinds of interesting stuff. I think I better bring also a wallet full of money. In the last picture you can see some primulas that I put on the balcony in a wooden fruit crate. I still have to paint the crate in order to cover the ugly text on it and also because it will resist a lot better outside once it's painted.

Muistakaahan muuten osallistua arvontaan!

(EN) A couple of days ago I stopped by the florist on my way home and now we have white muscari in a glass and fritillaria meleagris (or snake's head) in a vase on the kitchen window. Okay, there's also a basil plant, but it doesn't look too good after a prepared some pesto. I had never seen fritillaria meleagris before, probably because they don't really grow in Finland. When I buy flowers in a vase I usually plant them in the garden when the blooming is over and I'll do the same thing with these bulbs. It almost feels like you could start planting flowers already, though, since the weather is so warm that crocus and snowdrops are already flowering in our neighbors' gardens.

Krysanteemi

(EN) I have never really liked chrysanthemums but when I saw this enormous and dramatic flower I had to admit that maybe I had misjudged the flower. Elodie and Inga run a monthly flower styling and photo challenge called 2flowergirls and since the flower of this month is chrysanthemum I also participate to the challenge with these pictures.

When I saw the giant purple balls at the nearby flower shop I really had to bring one home. It would be great to have these incredible allium gigantium flowers also in our garden. Lately we have been admiring also hibiscus flowers at our home. Our older daughter got a small plant from her godmother when she was just a small baby but the plant never ever made a single bud while we were living in Finland. We started to grow a new plant from cutting before moving to Germany since the original plant had become really big, and now this small hibiscus is putting out buds and two of them are already blooming. It really paid to be patient and wait 11 years to see this happen :)

Der Blumenladen

Olen tainnut jo useamman kerran mainita blogissa ostaneeni kukkia lähikukkakaupasta.

I have already mentioned the nearby flower shop a few times in the blog posts. Also at the moment we have some peonies at home that I've bought there and it's about time to tell you more about this wonderful shop. We're really lucky to have the most beautiful flower shop of the city, Der Blumenladen, just a stone's throw away from our home, and I'm not exaggerating at all. The nice personnel does a huge job every morning and builds a real sea of flowers in front of the shop. In the evening the naturally have to carry everything back inside. Aside the flowers, the shop sells also small home decorative items, and the shop owner has paid attention to every little detail of the shop interior. There are beautiful arrangements everywhere and an incredible selection of flowers, for example peonies during the Christmas period. Also in these pictures there are some flowers that I had never seen before. If you like flowers this is absolutely a place to visit in Bremen, and nearby you find also my other favourite hangout place in the neighbourhood, the interior shop Summer House.
