Toimivuutta keittiöön

(FI) Onkohan se sen merkki, että pian on aika muuttaa tästä talosta pois, kun melkein neljä vuotta vaivanneet sisustusongelmat ovat yhtäkkiä alkaneet ratketa ja osaset loksahtaa paikoilleen? Keittiön osalta toimivan ratkaisun löytymistä edesauttoi liitoksista rikki mennyt baarituoli, jonka vuoksi piti miettiä uusia istuimia keittiöön. Vanhoja baarituoleja emme itse asiassa olleet itse valinneet ja hankkineet, vaan Suomen asuntomme edelliset omistajat jättivät ne meille ja ne vain jäivät käyttöön. Nyt kun uusien hankinta oli ajankohtainen, halusin löytää sellaiset tuolit, joista olisi iloa pitkäksi aikaa ja jotka sopisivat myös oman makumme mukaiseen moderniin ja linjakkaaseen keittiöön.

Eri tuolimalleja vertailtuani ihastuin Hayn About a Stool -tuoliin, jonka hintakin oli varsin kohtuullinen.  Kun sitten kävin katsomassa tuoleja Hayn liikkeessä (täällä Bremenissä on sellainen), tajusin niiden olevan auttamatta liian suurikokoiset keittiöömme. Kurja juttu, mutta minkäs teet. Kunnes noin viikko sitten päätin katsoa, miltä näyttäisi, jos kääntäisinkin Ikean saarekkeen ikkunaseinälle. Ja kappas, keittiöstähän tulikin yhtäkkiä ihan tilavan tuntuinen, jääkaapin eteen jäi kunnolla tilaa, mattokin sopi yhä lattialle ja, mikä parasta, saarekkeen eteen voi sijoittaa vähän reilummankin kokoiset baarituolit ilman, että ne haittaavat kulkua parvekkeelle. Kun löysin vielä nettikaupan, jolla oli tuoleja heti varastossa Hayn oman liikkeen kuukauden toimitusajan sijaan, lähtivät ne saman tien tilaukseen.

Lähetys saapui muutamassa päivässä, ja nyt nautimme entistä huomattavasti toimivammasta keittiöstä ja supermukavista tuoleista. Aiemmin pöydän kohdalla sijainnutta kattovalaisinta nostin hieman ylemmäs, jottei ole sellainen tunne, että siihen lyö päänsä jakkaralle istuutuessa. Vaikkei pyökkikaapistoille ja muille pinnoille tehty mitään, koko keittiö tuntuu käyneen läpi kasvojenkohotuksen ja siirtyneen vihdoin 2000-luvulle. Ikkunalle haaveilen vielä valkoisesta pellavalaskosverhosta tai -valelaskosverkosta. Pitäisiköhän yrittää ommella sellainen itse, kun sopivaa kangastakin löytyisi komerosta?

(IT) Significa forse che presto sarà l'ora di cambiare casa quando dopo quasi quattro anni comincio a trovare soluzioni ai problemi di arredo persistenti in questa casa? In cucina il processo è iniziato quando la struttura di uno degli sgabelli si è rotta e dovevamo cercare nuove sedie per sostituirli. In realtà non avevamo mai scelto e comprato gli sgabelli vecchi ma ci erano stati lasciati dagli ex proprietari della nostra casa in Finlandia e sono semplicemente rimasti in uso. Ora, visto che bisognava comprare sgabelli nuovi, volevo trovare un modello che andasse bene anche in una cucina moderna e lineare come piace a noi. 

Dopo aver paragonato tanti modelli mi piacevano di più gli sgabelli About a Stool di Hay e anche il prezzo era ragionevole. Solo che quando sono andata a vederli nel negozio di Hay (sì, ce l'abbiamo qui a Brema) ho capito che erano veramente troppo grandi per la nostra cucina. Peccato ma nulla da fare. Finché circa una settimana fa non mi è venuta l'idea di vedere come l'isola da cucina starebbe girata lungo la parete con la finestra. Che sorpresa, la cucina sembrava subito spaziosa, c'era molto di più spazio davanti al frigorifero, il tappeto ci stava pure e, la cosa più bella, ora c'era spazio a sufficienza anche per gli sgabelli più grandi senza bloccare il passaggio verso il balcone. Ho pure trovato un negozio online che aveva gli sgabelli già in magazzino mentre nel negozio di Hay si dovevano ordinare con un tempo di consegna di un mese. 

L'ordine è arrivato in pochi giorni e ora ci godiamo una cucina molto più funzionale e gli sgabelli belli e comodissimi. Ho alzato un po' la lampada che prima pendeva sopra l'isola, in modo che uno non deve temere di batterci la testa quando si siede. Anche se non abbiamo fatto nulla agli sportelli e alle superfici, la cucina sembra essersi rinfrescata e arrivata finalmente negli anni 2000. Vorrei ancora avere una tenda a baccherro in lino bianco alla finestra. Forse dovrei provare a cucirla io, visto che avrei già della stoffa adatta?

(EN) I wonder could it be a sign that we'll be moving out soon if I have suddenly started finding solutions to decoration problems we have had in this house for almost four years? In the kitchen the problem solving process started when the structure of one of the bar stools broke and we had to start looking for new ones. Actually, we hadn't chosen and bought the old stools but the previous owners of our home in Finland left them to use and they just remained in use. Now that we needed to buy new ones I wanted to find something that we would use for a long time and that would look good also in a sleek and modern kitchen that's made according to our own taste.

After comparing various models I fell in love with About a Stool by Hay and also the price was pretty reasonable. When I went to see the stools at the Hay store (yes, we have one here in Bremen), I noticed that they were far too big for our kitchen. Real bummer, but that's life. But then about a week ago I got an idea and decided to try and turn the Ikea kitchen island around. Incredible, the kitchen seemed immediately much more spacious, there was lots of space in front of the fridge, the rug still fit in the space and, best of all, you could have bigger stools without blocking the way to the balcony. I even found an online store that had the stools already in stock while at the Hay store you needed to order them and wait for a month or so.

The package arrived in a few days and now we're enjoying a more functional kitchen plus really comfortable bar stools. I lifted a bit the pendant that used to hang above the kitchen island so you don't feel like you will hit your head on it when you sit down. We didn't do anything to the kitchen cabinets or other surfaces in the space and it still feels like the kitchen has undergone a facelift and finally moved to the 21st Century. I would still love to add a white linen Roman blinds in the window. Maybe I should try and sew one myself since I already have some perfect linen fabric for it?

Mustaa ja makeaa

(FI) Tummien sävyjen ja valkoisen kontrasti tyttärien karkkipäivän lakritsikipossa näytti niin herkulliselta, että yritin vangita saman tunnelman valokuviin, ennen kuin viimeisetkin namit ehdittiin syödä. Lightroomissa vielä lisäsin lopuksi vähän syvyyttä tummiin sävyihin. Mitä te pidätte tällaisista vähän erilaisista blogikuvista? Palapelin palan muotoinen kippo on kirppislöytö, jonka pohjassa lukee Porvoo. Noitapillejä ja liitulakuja taas löytää ihan paikallisesta ruokakaupasta. Tosin noitapillipussissa lukee, ettei sisältö sovi lapsille. :) Herkullista viikkonloppua!

(IT) Il contrasto delle sfumature scure e del bianco nella ciotola di liquirizia sembrava così interessante che ho provato di catturare la stessa atmosfera nelle foto prima che le caramelle comparissero tutte. Ho ancora aumentato la profondità dei colori scuri con Lightroom. Come vi sembrano queste foto un po' diverse del solito? La ciotola proviene dal mercatino delle pulci in Finlandia e sotto c'è scritto Porvoo. La liquirizia si trova invece qui al supermercato ma in una delle confezioni c'era scritto che le caramelle non siano adatti ai bambini. :) Buon fine settimana!

(EN) The contrast between the dark and white colours in my daughter's liquorice cup was so delicious that I tried to capture the mood also in pictures before all the candy was gone. At the end I added some deepness to the dark tones in Lightroom. Do you like this kind of blog pictures? I have found the black bowl at a flea market in Finland and in the bottom there's written Porvoo. The liquorice was bought from a local supermarket but one of the bags said that the candy wasn't suitable for children. :) Have a lovely weekend!

Narsissit ruukussa

(FI) Ruokapöydältä löytyy tällä hetkellä helmikuinen asetelma. Kynttilä muistuttaa vielä talvesta ja harmaa on varsin hallitseva väri ulkona pilvisinä päivinä, mutta vihreä tuo jo toivoa lähestyvästä keväästä. Sipuleista pitäisi aueta valkoisia mininarsisseja, mutta toistaiseksi on kyllä näkynyt pelkkiä lehtiä. Arabian kukkaruukku ja Hayn kynttilänjalka ovat peräisin kirppikseltä ja harmaa metallimaljakko löytyi lähisisustuskaupasta eli Summer Housesta.

(IT) Questa composizione di oggetti si trova ora sul tavolo da pranzo. La candela ricorda che febbraio è ancora un mese invernale e il grigio è il colore dominante fuori quando non c'è il sole ma il verde della pianta dice che la primavera sta per arrivare. I bulbi dovrebbero essere narcisi miniatura bianchi ma per il momento si vedono solo foglie. Il vaso nero di Arabia e il portacandela di Hay sono dal mercatino delle pulci e il vaso grigio l'ho trovato da Summer House, il negozio di arredamento qui vicino.

(EN) On our dining table there's this arrangement at the moment. The candle reminds that February is still a winter month and gray is mostly the colour you see outside but the green colour tells that spring is coming soon. The bulbs should be white miniature daffodils but for the moment I haven't seen anything but leaves. The black Arabia flower vase and the Hay candle holder are from the flea market and the gray vase is from the nearby home decor shop, Summer House.

Lukemista ja tekemistä

(FI) Kotona Saksassa ollaan jälleen, ja matkalaukkujen lisäksi pitäisi purkaa kaikki joulukoristeet pois kotia koristamasta, vaikka tuntuu siltä, että vastahan ne nostettiin esille. Joululoman kuvasaldo oli todella niukka, eikä kukaan joulukuvia varmaan enää haluaisikaan katsella, mutta ikuistin sentään Helsingin vuoden 2013 harmaan joulusään, joka ei muuttunut muuksi koko kaksiviikkoisen aikana. Pimeyden vastapainoksi vietimme onneksi monta mukavaa hetkeä ystävien ja sukulaisten seurassa.

Matkalaukkujen täytteenä tuli taas kirja poikineen, jottei lukeminen pääse loppumaan kesken, ja tiedossa on myös monta elokuvailtaa, koska esikoinen sai hartaasti toivomansa Harry Potter -leffaboksin. Siirryimme joululomalla vihdoin tablettitietokoneaikaan, kun vanha kannettava alkoi ennen joulua näyttää pahoja hyytymisen merkkejä, ja täytyy sanoa, että on tuo iPad kyllä kätevä kapistus. Tilasin heti itselleni sähköisen version Italian Elle Decorista, jota täällä Bremenissä ei löydä mistään, ja täytyy tutustua muuhunkin tarjolla olevaan lehtivalikoimaan, jos vaikka lehtipinot pysyisivät jatkossa vähän pienempinä. Hyvien kirppislöytöjen putki jatkuu näköjään myös tänä vuonna, sillä ostin heti vuoden alussa Fidasta eurolla mustan Hayn Lup-kynttilänjalan.

Meillä oli kotimatkalla vaihto Amsterdamissa ja nappasin lentokentän myymälästä mukaani alakuvassa näkyvän lehtipinon katseltavaksi. Keramiikkatyöt ovat lasten savityökurssin tuotoksia, jotka paljastuivat äidin joulupaketeista. Harmaa-vaaleanpunaiseen kulhoon tuli minusta hienot värit, ja ihan kuin tuossa valkoisessa rasiassa olisi vähän Kaj Franck -vaikutteita.

(IT) Siamo tornati a casa in Germania e oltre alle valigie dovremmo svuotare anche la casa dalle decorazioni di natale anche se mi sembra di averle messe appena ieri. Ho fatto veramente poche foto durante le vacanze e tutti saranno già anche stanchi di vedere foto di natale ma ho immortalato almeno il tempo che faceva nel natale 2013 a Helsinki e il tempo non è cambiato mai durante le due settimane di vacanza. Per fortuna abbiamo passato anche tanti momenti belli con amici e parenti nonostante il grigiore. 

Abbiamo messo nelle valigie tanti libri da leggere e nelle prossime settimane passeremo anche serate guardando i film di Harry Potter, visto che la primogenita ha ricevuto il box completo per natale. Durante le vacanze siamo diventati anche utenti di un tablet che sostituisce un computer portatile che non vuole più funzionare. Devo dire che è proprio pratico. Ho fatto subito l'abbonamento a Elle Decor Italia, visto che non si trova nelle edicole qui a Brema, e devo guardare anche l'offerta delle altre riviste perché potrebbe essere un modo per tenere sotto controllo le pile di riviste che tendono a crescere troppo. L'anno nuovo si è presentato subito come fortunato al mercatino delle pulci quando ho comprato un portacandele Lup di HAY al prezzo di un euro. 

Siamo tornati a casa via Amsterdam e ho comprato alcune riviste olandesi all'edicola dell'aeroporto. La ceramica è fatta dalle mie figlie al corso di ceramica e l'ho ricevuta come regalo di natale. Il colore grigio della ciotola mi piace molto e il contenitore sembra aver trovato ispirazione dal design essenziale di Kaj Franck.

(EN) We're back home in Germany again and in addition to the luggage we should empty the house from the Christmas decoration even though I feel like I only took it out yesterday. I didn't take almost any pictures during the holidays and I'm sure everyone's tired to see Christmas photos anyway, but at least I can show you what the weather was like in Helsinki during Christmas 2013 and during the rest of the two weeks we stayed there. However, we had a lovely time meeting our friends and family in spite of the gray weather.

We packed in our suitcases lots of books to read and since our older daughter finally got the complete Harry Potter film collection, we will have quite many cinema evenings at home in the near future. We finally entered the tablet era during the holidays, because our old laptop is a bit broken. I find the new iPad extremely handy and subscribed immediately to Elle Decor Italia that you can't find in the Bremen bookstalls. I'll have to check what other magazines are available since that might help keeping the magazine piles under control. January started well also at the flea market where I bought a HAY Lup candle holder for one euro.

We flew to Bremen via Amsterdam and I bought some Dutch home decor magazines at the airport. The pottery is done by my daughters and I received it for Christmas. I really like the colours of the pink and gray bowl and find that the white jar resembles somehow Kaj Franck's simple design.

Ruskeaa ja valkoista

Diamond-tuolin vieressä hetken ollut ruskea sarjapöytä palasi alakerran työhuoneeseen ja sen tilalle tuli valkoinen Hayn Tray-pöytä. Huoneessa alkoi olla vähän liian monenlaista puunväriä, kun sohvapöytä on tammea, Artekin penkki koivua, ikkunanpuitteet keskiruskeat ja lattia kai lähinnä kirsikkaa. Tilasin pöydän Connoxilta torstai-iltana, ja toimitus oli niin uskomattoman nopea, että pöytä tuotiin jo seuraavana iltapäivänä. Harmi vain, etten ollut silloin kotona, ja täällä odotti vain lappu, jossa paketti käskettiin hakea postista. Mies meni lauantaiaamuna postiin hakemaan sitä, mutta ei saanut lähetystä mukaansa, koska olin unohtanut kirjoittaa nimeni valtakirjaan. Posti oli siinä vaiheessa tietysti jo menossa kiinni, joten pöytä saatiin lopulta kotiin vasta seuraavana maanantaina. Odottavan aika on pitkä... Valkoiselle pöydälle ja valaisimelle kontrastia antaa Arabian taideosaston valkosukkainen kulho, jonka olen pelastanut muutama vuosi sitten äitini kirppiskuormasta. Outo mutta jotenkin silti hauska esine oli lapsuudenkodissani aina takanreunuksella.

Il set di tavolini marroni che stava accanto alla sedia di Bertoia è tornato giù nello studio e nel suo posto si trova ora un tavolino Tray di Hay. C'erano troppi tipi di legno diverso nel soggiorno, visto che la panchina di Artek è di betulla, il tavolino grande di rovere, le cornici delle finestre marroni e i pavimenti assomigliano al legno di ciliegio. Ho ordinato il tavolino nuovo da Connox giovedì e la consegna è stata velocissima. Hanno cercato di portare il pacco già venerdì pomeriggio ma siccome non ero a casa ho trovato solo un bigliettino che diceva di andare a prendere la spedizione all'ufficio postale. Mio marito è andato a prenderla ma non gliela hanno dato perché ho dimenticato di mettere la mia firma nel bigliettino. Naturalmente l'ufficio postale stava già per chiudere e abbiamo avuto il tavolino solo lunedì. L'attesa è sembrata lunghissima... Sul tavolino c'è una vecchia ciotola marrone di Arabia per dare un po' di contrasto. L'ho salvata qualche anno fa da una scatola che mia madre doveva portare al mercatino delle pulci. Nella mia casa d'infanzia questa ciotola particolare ma simpatica stava sempre sul caminetto.

The dark brown nesting tables have moved back the the downstairs study and now there's a Hay Tray table next to the Bertoia chair. There were too many different kinds of wood in the living room since the Artek bench is made of birch, the coffee table of oak, the windows are brown and the floors resemble cherry wood. I ordered the table from Connox on Thursday and the delivery was incredibly fast. They tried to bring the package already on Friday afternoon but since I wasn't home I only found a note saying that we should pick the package up from the post office. My husband went there on Saturday when the post office was already about to close but didn't get the table since I forgot to put my signature to the note. We finally got the package on Monday and I really couldn't wait... On the table there's an old brown Arabia bowl that I have saved from a box my mother was going to take to the flea market. This somehow strange but interesting bowl used to be on the mantelpiece in my childhood home.

Antik-Kontor

Esittelen seuraavaksi taas pari vierailun arvosta bremeniläistä kohdetta. Ensimmäinen on posliinikauppa Antik-Kontor, josta löytää täydennystä aika moneen astiasarjaan. Yhdellä hyllyllä kökötti Arabian valmistama Ulla Procopen suunnittelema punoskahvainen teepannu, hintaa 20 euroa, joten Suomi-designkin oli ainakin kuvaushetkellä edustettuna. Mukava kauppias kertoi, että hänen perheensä oli asunut talossa jo usean sukupolven ajan ja että kaupan tilalla oli alkujaan keittiö. Ruokasali sen sijaan sijaitsi yläkerrassa, joten ruoka piti kantaa joka ateriaa varten yläkertaan. Nykyään yläkertaan on remontoitu keittiö ylemmissä kerroksissa sijaitsevien asuintilojen yhteyteen. Kaupan sisäänkäynti on hieman katutason alapuolella tyypillisen vanhan bremeniläistalon (Altbremer Haus) tapaan, sillä katuja on korotettu maanpintaan nähden. Liike sijaitsee lähellä Hayn myymälää ja Popoa ja sen yhteystiedot ja aukioloajat löytyvät täältä.

Vi presento nei prossimi post un paio di posti che vale la pena visitare a Brema. Il primo è Antik-Kontor, dove si possono trovare pezzi di tanti servizi di porcellana. Quando ci sono andata c'era anche un pezzo di design finlandese, una teiera bianca di Ulla Procope, prodotta da Arabia, che costava 20 euro. Il proprietario era molto simpatico e mi ha raccontato che la sua famiglia abita nella casa da varie generazioni e che nel posto del negozio c'era originalmente la cucina. La sala da pranzo invece era a primo piano quindi i cibi dovevano sempre essere portati al piano di sopra. Ora la casa è stata ristrutturata e la cucina si trova sopra il negozio dove la famiglia continua ad abitare. L'ingresso del negozio è un po' sotto il livello della strada, una caratteristica tipica delle case tradizionali di Brema (Altbremer Haus) visto che la strada è alzata paragonato al livello terra. Antik-Kontor è situato vicino ai negozi di Hay e Popo e l'indirizzo e gli orari di apertura si trovano qui.

In the next posts I'm going to show you a couple of places worth visiting in Bremen. The first one is Antik-Kontor where you can find replacements to many porcelain services. When I visited the shop there was also some Finnish design on sale, a white teapot by Ulla Procope for Arabia, price 20 euros. The owner was very nice and he told me that various generations of his family had been living in the house. The kitchen was originally where there's now the shop, but the dining room was upstairs, so all the dishes had to be carried there. Now the house has been renovated and the kitchen is upstairs where the family still continues to live. The front door is a little under the street level which is typical for the traditional houses in Bremen (Altbremer Haus) since the streets have been raised compared to the ground level. The shop is situated near Hay showroom and Popo and you can find the address and the opening hours here.

Hay Bremen

Bremeniin avattiin melko hiljattain Hayn oma liike, jota ehdin perjantaina vihdoin katsomaan. Mukava henkilökunta antoi minun kuvata rauhassa, joten tässä vähän tunnelmia liikkeestä. Liikkeen nettisivut löytyvät täältä, mistä löytyy myös tarkka osoite ja tietoja aukioloajoista. Kyllä oli ihana tila ja ihania tuotteita!

A Brema è stato aperto abbastanza di recente un negozio della marca Hay e venerdì sono finalmente andata a vedere com'è. Il personale era molto simpatico e mi hanno fatto fotografare tranquillamente quindi ecco un po' di assaggi. Il negozio ha anche questo sito internet dove si trovano sia l'indirizzo esatto che gli orari di apertura. Uno showroom bellissimo e prodotti altrettanto belli!

A new Hay shop has been opened in Bremen a while a go and on Friday I finally had time to visit it. The personnel was really nice they allowed me to take pictures so here's a peek inside the showroom. The shop has also this internet page where you can find the address and check the opening hours. What a lovely showroom and what lovely products they have!
