Parvekeviljelmä

Meidän hyötykasvimaa sijaitsee parvekkeella, koska kokatessa ei ehdi juosta kahta kerrosta portaita puutarhaan yrttienhakureissulle. Yrttilaatikkoon istutin rosmariinia, basilikaa, ruohosipulia, salviaa, timjamia ja persiljaa, ja kaikki paitsi timjami ovatkin viihtyneet ja kasvaneet hyvin. Basilikasta taidan valmistaa pian ison satsin pestoa annospaloina pakastettavaksi. Löysin kukkakaupasta ennen kesälomaa myös vähän surkean näköisen tomaatintaimen, mutta sepä olikin niin sitkeä yksilö, että on kasvanut isoksi tomaatteja täynnä olevaksi pensaaksi (kiitos myös talonvahtimme ja kesäpuutarhurimme Liisan). Muutaman kypsän tomaatin olemme jo syöneet ja ne olivat uskomattoman maukkaita ja makeita. Tuparilahjaksi saatu oliivipuukin on kasvanut siihen malliin, että jos vain onnistun pitämään sen talven yli hengissä, taidan odottaa ensi kesänä myös oliivisatoa. Näyttävä neitoperhonen istahti pari päivää sitten parvekkeen kaiteelle poseeraamaan ja odotti siinä kiltisti siivet levällään, kunnes ehdin hakea kameran.

Il nostro orto sta sul balcone perché non c'è tempo di correre giù in giardino a prendere un po' di erbe aromatiche quando qualcosa bolle in pentola. Nel vaso grande ho messo rosmarino, basilico, erba cipollina, salvia, timo e prezzemolo e tutto tranne timo stanno crescendo bene. Il basilico è tanto grande che penso di preparare pesto e surgelarlo. Prima delle vacanze ho comprato una piccola pianta di pomodoro che sembrava un po' sofferente ma invece è diventato grande e ha fatto tantissimi pomodorini. (Grazie a Liisa, che ci ha curato la casa e il giardino durante le vacanze!) Ne abbiamo già mangiato alcuni e sono incredibilmente saporiti e dolci. L'ulivo che abbiamo ricevuto come regalo quando abbiamo inaugurato la casa sta anche crescendo benissimo e quasi quasi aspetto di trovarci olive la prossima estate se solo riusciamo a tenerlo vivo durante l'inverno. La bellissima farfalla, Vanessa io, si è fermata sul nostro balcone un paio di giorni fa ed è rimasta lì con le ali aperte ad aspettare finche non ho fatto in tempo a prendere la macchina fotografica.

Our kitchen garden is on the balcony because you can't run down the stairs to the garden to get some herbs while cooking something. I put rosemary, basil, chives, sage, thyme and parsley in the big planter box and everything but thyme has been growing well. There's so much basil that I'm going to make a big batch of pesto and put it in the freezer. Before the holidays I bought a small tomato plant that didn't look too good but it has become a big plant with lots of tomatoes (thanks to our house sitter and summer gardener Liisa). We have already tasted a couple of tomatoes and they were incredibly tasty and sweet. The olive tree we got as a housewarming gift has also been growing very well and if we manage to keep it alive during the winter I almost expect to see some olives in it next summer. The beautiful Peacock butterfly stopped by a couple of days ago and waited patiently on the balcony until I had my camera ready.
