(FI) Jee, yksi ikuisuusprojekti on saatettu taas (melkein) päätökseen! Vanha Domus-tuoli oli työn alla todella pitkään, mutta nyt se on kuin ihmeen kaupalla ruokasalissa esittelemässä uutta mattamustaa pintaansa. Pöydän ympärillä on vihdoin suunniteltu istuinsetti, kun molemmissä päissä on käsinojallinen tuoli. Kun avuksi otetaan vielä pari Aalto-jakkaraa, niin ruokapöydän ääreen mahtuu jopa 12 henkeä kerralla.
Alkuperäinen Domus-tuoli, joka näkyy postauksen viimeisessä kuvassa, oli mielestäni aivan ihana. Valitettavasti vain sen lisäksi että istuimen reunasta puuttui viilun paloja, koko pinta oli halkeillut ja runko hutera, joten käyttökunnossa tuoli ei missään tapauksessa sellaisenaan ollut. Ammattilainen varmaankin olisi pystynyt restauroimaan sen alkuperäisen kaltaiseksi kaksiväriseksi, mutta omat taitoni tuntien katsoin parhaaksi käsitellä tuolin mustaksi.
Rungon vahvistamisen (liimaa ja puutikkuja ruuvinreikiin) ja monen paklaamis- ja hiomiskierroksen jälkeen tein pintakäsittelyn Tikkurilan sävytetyllä Kiva-lakalla (sävy Hiili). Lakkakerrosten lukumäärää en edes laskenut, muttei tainnut viisi riittää missään kohtaa. Kun vetelin selkänojan etupuolelle viimeiseksi tarkoitettua kerrosta, onnistuin vielä sohaisemaan pensselin jo hieman kuivahtaneeseen reunaan, joten oli pakko lisätä kauttaaltaan vielä yksi bonuskerros seuraavana päivänä. Siinä vaiheessa hieman jo harmitti... No, lopuksi pinnasta tuli kuitenkin mielestäni todella kaunis, ja puun tuntu on yhtä tallella.
Mikä sitten on vielä kesken? Kasasin tuolin käyttäen vanhoja ruuveja, joista olin poistanut ruosteet sitruunahapon avulla. Ruoste oli kuitenkin tehnyt ruuvin pinnasta kovin karhean, ja koska kanta jää ihan pintaan, istuja saattaisi rikkoa housunsa tai naarmuttaa ihonsa. Nyt pitää siis vielä ostaa uudet ruuvit ja vaihtaa ne alkuperäisten tilalle. Tuoli on näin ollen toistaiseksi istumiskiellossa, mutta katsella sitä onneksi jo saa. Juuri tuota mustaa tuolia ruokasalin sisustus tuntuikin olevan vailla. Mitä te tykkäätte?
(IT) Evviva, ho (quasi) finito un progetto che sembrava non finisse mai! Ho restaurato una vecchia sedia Domus veramente a lungo ma ora sta nella sala da pranzo a mostrare la nuova superfice nera opaca. Intorno al tavolo ci sono finalmente tutte le sedie che ci volevo quando a tutt'e due le estremità c'è una sedia coi braccioli. Prendendo anche un paio di sgabelli di Artek ci possiamo sedere fino a 12 persone.
La sedia originale che si vede nell'ultima foto mi piaceva tanto ma purtroppo ci mancavano pezzi dal bordo del sedile e inoltre la struttura non era stabile. Non ci si poteva quindi sedere. Un professionista avrebbe sicuramente saputo restaurare la sedia com'era originalmente ma sapendo i miei limiti ho deciso di farla tutta nera.
Dopo aver rinforzato la struttura (ho messo colla e legno nei buchi prima di riattaccare le viti) e tanti giri di stuccatura e levigatura ho laccato la sedia con lacca Kiva nera di Tikkurila. Non so quanti strati ne ho messo ma penso più di cinque. Quando pensavo di dare l'ultima passata allo schienale sono riuscita a toccare con il pennello il lato già un po' asciutto e ho dovuto aggiungere ancora uno strato il giorno dopo. A quel punto mi sentivo piuttosto frustrata... Comunque ora la superficie mi sembra molto bella e c'è comunque sempre la sensazione di legno.
Allora cosa manca? Ho montato la sedia con le vecchie viti da cui avevo tolto la ruggine con acido citrico. La ruggine ha comunque reso le viti molto ruvide e siccome restano in superficie, uno potrebbe rompersi i pantaloni o graffiarsi. Bisogna ancora comprare nuove viti delle stesse misure e cambiarle. È quindi vietato sedersi sulla sedia per il momento ma la si può già guardare. Sembra che fosse proprio il pezzo mancante dall'arredo della sala da pranzo. Voi che ne dite?
(EN) Whopee, I have (almost) finished a project that seemed to go on forever! I refurbished our old Domus chair for several months but, incredible but true, the chair is now in our dining room showing its new black finishing. Around the table there's finally the planned amount of chairs and one with armrests at both table ends. If we add also a couple of Artek stools, we can have 12 people sitting around the table.
I really loved the original chair that you can see in the last picture but it was in a pretty bad shape. There were pieces of wood missing from the seat, the surface had lots of small cracks and the structure wasn't stable. So you couldn't actually sit on the chair. I'm sure a professional would have been able to return the chair close to its original state but I know my limits and decided to make it all black.
After reinforcing the structure (I put glue and pieces of wood in the screw holes) and many rounds of putty and sanding I finished the wooden surface with black Kiva lacquer by Tikkurila. I didn't count the layers but I'm pretty sure there's more than five. When I giving the last coat on the back rest i managed to touch with the brush the part that was already a bit dry so I had to add an extra layer the next day. At that point I was feeling pretty frustrated... Anyhow, at the end the surface looks really good and it still feels like wood.
So what's left to do? After lacquering I mounted the pieces using the original screws. I did remove the rust with citric acid but the rust had made the metal really rough. Since the head remains on the surface, one could rip the trousers or scratch one's skin. Therefore the screws still need to be replaced. It's thus forbidden to sit on the chair for the moment but at least you can already look at it. It feels like this black chair was really the missing piece of the dining room interior.
