9.12. Leikkoamaryllikset

(FI) Tiesittekö, että yleisesti amaryllikseksi nimitetty joulukukka on oikeasti jaloritarinkukka, joka kuuluu ritarinkukkien (Hippeastrum) sukuun? Oikea amaryllis taas on vähän erinäköinen vaaleanpunakukkainen liljakasvi, jonka tieteellinen nimi on Amaryllis belladonna. No, en tiennyt minäkään ennen kuin ryhdyin lukemaan Wikipediaa :) Joka tapauksessa amaryllikset kuuluvat ehdottomasti jouluun ja mieluiten valkoisina. Olen aina aiemmin ostanut kukat sipuleina, mutta nyt olen ostanut niitä pari kertaa leikkokukkina, eikä se ole lainkaan hullumpi vaihtoehto. Kukat kestävät maljakossa kauniina suunnilleen yhtä kauan kuin sipulikukat, eikä lopuksi tarvitse miettiä, mitä sipulille tekisi. (En halua heittää sipuleita pois, koska tiedän, että ne saa kukkimaan uudestaankin. Toisaalta en muista hoitaa niitä oikein, joten lopulta niitä vain lojuu purkeissa kellarissa. Joskus joku sipuli saattaa yllättäen kukkiakin.) Olen ottanut leikkoamaryllisten kaveriksi maljakkoon jokusen eukalyptuksen oksan, sillä niistä tulee aivan ihana ja raikas tuoksu, kun lehtiä vähän sivelee.

(IT) Lo sapevate che il fiore natalizio che di solito chiamiamo amarillo o amaryllis è in realtà Hippeastrum? Il vero amaryllis, Amarillide ovvero Amaryllis belladonna, è una pianta bulbosa di un aspetto un po' diverso e coi fiori rosa. Beh, non lo sapevo neanch'io prima che mi son messa a leggere Wikipedia :) In ogni caso ci voglio amarilli a casa nel periodo natalizio e preferibilmente bianchi. Prima ho sempre comprato solo bulbi ma quest'anno ho comprato già un paio di volte amarilli come fiori recisi ed è un'ottima soluzione. I fiori durano nel vaso quanto quelli del bulbo e alla fine non devi pensare cosa fare al bulbo. (Io non li voglio mai buttare perché so che possono fiorire anche altre volte. Poi comunque non mi ricordo di prendere cura di questi bulbi e restano in giro in cantina. Qualche volta può capitare che qualche bulbo fioriesce a sorpresa.) Con gli amarilli ho preso rami di eucalipto. Mi piace tantissimo il profumo fresco che fanno quando si toccano le foglie.

(EN) Did you know that the Christmas flower that we normally call Amaryllis is actually Hippeastrum? The real Amaryllis, Amaryllis belladonna, is a somewhat different plant with pink flowers. Well, I didn't know it either before reading Wikipedia. :) Anyhow, Amaryllis it must be for Christmas and preferably white. I always used to buy bulbs but this year I have bought already a couple of times Amaryllis as cut flowers and it's actually a great option. The flowers lasted as long as the ones that come with the bulb and at the end you don't have the bulb problem. (I never want to throw them away since I know they can flower again but then I forget to take care of them and they just remain in the basement. Occasionaly I find a bud in one of them to my great surprise.) I have bought also some eucalyptus branches with the cut Amaryllis. I just love the fresh smell that comes from leave when you touch them.
