7 Belgian Designers You Should Know

James Van Vossel: Lounge Chair FF1 for Fox & Freeze & Side Table 1025 for Thonet

(EN) We have already visited two stunning Belgian designer homes but their owners weren't at all the only designers we met during the blog tour organized by Christiaan Kastrop and Christophe De Schauvre, the guys behind the new Wanderful.design site. Now I'll present you the rest of these talented and versatile designers who all have a really original style and feel passionate about their work. Let's start with  Jan Kuppers (1) who designs among other things beautiful leather bags whose every little detail is carefully planned but also works as an industrial design teacher. One of the recent projects for this designer has been a coffee roastery, Monx Coffee, situated in his own home! Not bad as a living room extension, don't you think? The espresso was absolutely the best one I had during the tour, I really love people who understand the importance of good coffee! :)

(IT) Abbiamo incontrato Frederik Boonen (2) and James Van Vossel (3) a cena nel ristorante Noenissa dove avevano portato alcuni oggetti da presentarci.

(EN) We met Frederik Boonen (2) and James Van Vosselin (3) for dinner at restaurant Noenissa where they had brought some of their products to show us. Boonen Design Studio starts the design process from the idea that the product must bring some added value to the consumer. Besides the form, important are also the functionality and the economy in production. Van Vossel instead starts by experimenting and playing even in a provocative way. The idea and the sketches are taken to the studio so the design may reflect the way the material works best. It's pretty fascinating that even if these two designers have quite a different way of working, the end result is in both the cases an aesthetically pleasing and functional object that anyhow contains some new and innovative solutions.

(FI) Frederik Delbartin (4) työskentelykenttään kuuluvat teollinen muotoilu, strateginen muotoilujohtaminen ja konsultointi. Delbart on aiemmin pelkästään B2B-myyntiin suuntautuneen huonekalutehdas Recorin uusi taiteellinen johtaja, joka on uudistanut yrityksen tuotevalikoiman suoraan kuluttajille suunnatuksi, viisi eri tuoteperhettä sisältäväksi Recor Home -mallistoksi. Tapasimme Delbartin Recor Homen upouudella showroomilla ja pääsimme näkemään, miten mallistoja oli ideoitu valtavien moodbordien avulla. Todella kiinnostavaa! Meidät haastettiin tekemään showroomilla myös pieni pikainen stailaus, alla minun näkemykseni viihtyisästä lukunurkkauksesta Recor Homen tyyliin. Vain kahvikupillinen puuttuu!

(IT) Frederik Delbart (4) lavora con design industriale, design management strategico e come consulente.

(EN) Frederik Delbart (4) works in the fields of industrial design, strategic design management and consultancy. He's the new art director of furniture company Recor that used to do only B2B sales. Delbart has now completely revised the product selection into Recor Home brand that's divided into 5 different collections thought for private homes. We met Delbart at the brand new Recor Home showroom and got to see how the collections were born using huge moodboards. Pretty interesting! We were invited to do a quick styling using the things we found in the showroom so below you see my version of a cosy Recor Home reading nook. The only thing that's missing is a cup of coffee!

(EN) We were introduced to Roel Vandebeek's (5) design in Thor Park, a former mine site changed into a tecnology, energy and innovation center where the designer had an exhibition called Objet Portrait. For this exhibition Vandebeek had designed objects inpired by local celebrities, two objects for each one with one object purely an art piece and the other one something practical that could be put into production. Here I found something that went directly into my wish list, a candle holder that works like a playground seesaw. It would be so cool to burn candles in this caneld holder and see if the structure will change its position at some point during the evening! At the exhibition there was also a picture introduction into the designers career, I was really impressed by all the different things he has designed.

(FI) Michaël Verheyden (6) otti meidät vastaan uudella työhuoneellaan, jossa sekä suunnitellaan että valmistetaan osa tuotteista. Verheydenin tuotteiden muotokieli on minimalistista ja äärimmilleen hiottua, yksinkertaista muttei koskaan itsestäänselvää. Tuotteet valmistetaan tinkimättömän viimeistellysti luonnonmateriaaleista kuten nahasta, puusta, marmorista ja messingistä. Oman malliston lisäksi studiolla valmistuu tilaustuotteita, jotka on mitoitettu asiakkaiden tarpeisiin, olivatpa nämä arkkitehtejä, sisustussuunnittelijoita tai yksityishenkilöitä. Studiorakennuksen rouheat pinnat toimivat kauniisti viimeisteltyjen ja ylellisten esineiden taustana.

(EN) Michaël Verheyden (6) invited us to his new studio where new products are designed and some products are also manufactured. Verneyden's design is really minimalistic and elegant, simple but never obvious. The products are manufactured with extreme care in the finishing, using natural materials like leather, wood, marble and brass. Beside his own collection Verheyden also produces bespoke objects for architects, interior designers or private customers. The rough and unfinished surfaces of the studio space work beautifully as a contrasting background to the polished and luxurious products.

(EN) Last but not least comes Kristof Pycke (7), the art director of  Kreon, a company producing architectural lighting solutions. This designer doesn't only create lights but has also designed the stunning and modern company headquarters in collaboration with  CONIX RDBM Architects. The designer told us that he didn't find the leap into architecture so challenging since he had always been interested also in that field. Well, I'm pretty sure not anyone could do the same! One of the solutions I really appreciated in the building were the corridors flooding with light situated on the side of the building between two glass walls instead of being a dark space in the middle, illuminated only with artificial lighting.

Linde Hermans's Home and Studio

Esittelin teille viime viikolla jo yhden upean designkodin, johon pääsin tutustumaan Wanderful design blogtourilla.

Standardiratkaisuja on turha täältä etsiä.

(EN) Today I'll take you to a Belgian home where it feels like you're inside a fairy tale.

I already showed you one stunning designer home, that we visited during the Wanderful design blogtour. Also designer  Linde Hermans invited our blogger group to her home. Linde designs a bit of everything from textile and ceramics to furniture and more. Linde's and her family's home was built in two parts and in the middle there used to be a covered terrace that was later closed and now works as a dining space. Also Linde's design studio is situated in the same building.

"Designing is playing", says Linde Hermans, and it shows in her home. She has added everywhere surprising and funny details that make the imagination fly. Standard solutions aren't something you will find in this house. The kitchen cabinet handles seem to be installed by a knife thrower. Or have you ever seen a toilet with a plastic bucket as a washbasin? The partition walls and doors have been substituted with heavy curtains and the spaces are situated on various levels. Different materials like tiles, concrete and wall are used in the surfaces and also recycled materials were used when the house was built.

I was really impressed by the fact that even though this is a designer home it's above all a family home for a family where creativity lives in all its different forms. Next to the kitchen there's a music corner for playing different instuments (sorry, the picture was blurred), in the dining room there are wall cabinets with doors you can draw on, and Linde told me that the children are often crafting also in the design studio. In this home you don't need to worry about the kids making a mess since the toys are part of the interior. And still everything is as stylish as can be!

Linde Hermans, thank you so much for letting us visit your beautiful home! It's a pity that our daughters are already teenagers, otherwise I would have stolen an idea or two:)

Designer Home: Studio Segers

Le Sac / Indera
(FI) Limburg on Belgian hollanninkielisen Flanderin itäisin provinssi, joka rajoittuu Alankomaihin ja jonka pääkaupunki on Hasselt.  Asukkaita Limburgin alueella on lähes 900 000. Kun sain uuden Wanderful.design-sivuston taustajoukoilta kutsun lähteä blogikiertueelle tutustumaan alueeseen, sen designtarjontaan ja suunittelijoihin, en epäröinyt kahta kertaa, sillä belgialaisen designin tuntemuksessani oli toden totta kohentamisen varaa.

Kolmen päivän tiivis ohjelma käynnistyi keskiviikkoaamuna vierailulla perheyritys Studio Segersin nuorempaa sukupolvea edustavien suunnittelijoiden kotiin.

Seinällä oleva sinisävyinen installaatio on Studio Pieter Stockmansin keramiikkaa. Kierrätysmuovista valmistetut H-Bench-ulkokalusteet Studio Segers on suunnitellut paikalliselle Eco-Oh!:lle. Pöydällä olevan upean marmorikulhon on valmistanut Il Granito.

Olohuoneen pianonurkkauksen nahkainen nojatuoli suorastaan kutsuu syliinsä rentoutumaan.

(EN) Limburg is the easternmost province in the region of Flanders in Belgium. It borders with the Netherlands and its capital is Hasselt. Almost 900 000 people live in the region. When the people behind the new site Wanderful.design invited me to come on a blog tour to get to know the area, its design and designers, I didn't hesitate at all since my knowledge on Belgian design really was pretty scarce.

We started our three busy tour days on Wednesday by visiting the home of the younger generation of family business Studio Segers. Both designers and graphic designers work in the design studio and soon the architect who designed this simple but stunning concrete house should join them.

It was a clever idea to start the introduction to the design in Limburg from this house since the house is not only full of Studio Segers' own award winning design but also things that connected with the things we saw later. The black lighting tracks are made by Kreon, a company that produces architectural lighting solutions. The pale blue installation on the wall is ceramics by Studio Pieter Stockmans. The H-Bench outdoor furniture in recycled plastic was designed by Studio Segers for a local company called Eco-Oh!. The marble bowl on the table is made by Il Granito. We visited all these companies during our three-day tour.

Let's talk a bit more about this house and what I loved about it. Despite the concrete surfaces (or thanks to them) there was a really warm feel in the house. The thin curtains created a bit of a hotel feel and softness. The high front of the kitchen island works nicely in an open space. You can hide the dishes or other stuff on the worktop behind it. Notice the ingenious kitchen stool that includes a support for when you climb up the steps. The same piece of furniture also works as a nightstand and clothes rack when placed in the bedroom.

The lounge chair in the piano corner of the living room was almost too inviting. Some colourful details like the purple couch (prototype, not in production) made sure that the overall look didn't feel boring. The spacious garden with a terrace opening straight from the living room must be the perfect place to spend summer days. And in the back of the garden there was a design chicken house, obviously by Studio Segers, with a couple of hens! This beautiful and functional house shows that it's possible to live with small children without doing compromises when it comes to style.

Thank you Wim Segers and Bob Segers, it was a pleasure chatting with you!
